Man I feel so inadequate about now. In 1971 I could tell you anything you dared to ask about the sweet 16. I could field strip it with my eyes closed reassemble it, jack a round in without ever touching the charging handle and put one up a gnats ass at a 100 yards.
Sadly, I fast forward 37 years to 2008. I am no longer the 17 year old Genie I once was. I am forced to swallow my pride and ask some newbie questions. I've decided to go with a Colt. I had a Colt back in the day, I want a Colt now. I'm willing to pay and willing to wait. But I am confused. I like the Colt AR15A3 heavy barrel, AR6721 I believe. I can change the hand guards later. The twist is one in nine. Will that allow me to shoot any and all the ammo out there? Also I read the Colt description where it says "METHOD OF OPERATION Gas; Direct system; Locking bolt" and goes on to further describe it as having "Unique direct gas operating system eliminates the conventional operating rod and results in fewer and lighter components. Does that mean it has the gas piston I've been reading about? Damn I feel old. I appreciate any help with this guys. |

The gas system is still the same on Colts. 1/9 twist is good, however most Colts come with a 1/7 twist which is just a little bit better. Both twist rates will shoot 55gr and 62gr bullets just fine. Stay with Colt and you won't go wrong. |

I'm just as old as you and now have 7 AR's You made a wise choice in a Colt but get a 1-7 twist. The new bullets are 75-77 grain and the 1-9 is particular about them, All of my Colts sport the 1-7 and I can reload and shoot the 77 grain Sierra's with ease. +1 |

1/7 is better all around but 1/9 will handle anything under 70 grains in the vast majority of cases. You really dont know until you actually shoot the gun with a paticular load. Its on the edge and it depends on the induvidual barrel and ammo combo.
I bought my wife a 6721 and plan to have the barrel lightened under the handguards. I was going to sell just the upper and get a 6520 type upper so its easier for her to handle but just going to send it to ADCO one of these days to get spun on a lathe. |

Okay, I'll bite. How do you "jack a round in without ever touching the charging handle"? The only way I've ever seen it done was to slam the buttstock down on a hard surface like concrete. Inertia will keep the bolt going down and will chamber a round. DEFINATELY WEAPON ABUSE, SAFETY VIOLATION AND NOT A RECOMMENDED PRACTICE! |
