I've got a Phantom FH I need to install on my Bushie 16" bbl pre-ban upper. The only other FH I've installed is a Vortex and all I had to do was screw it on.

Anyway, the FH I have is the YM28 Phantom from Yankee Hill. It came with a crush washer. I've searched the boards and found a few posts about installing flash hiders. I would like to time the FH so the slots are at approximately 45 degrees off from the 12 o'clock position to minimize kicking up dust when shooting prone. Seems like a pretty straightforward affair. Just slip on the crush washer then screw on the FH till it's aligned the way I want it. Am I correct on this?

Also, I was considering using a drop or two of blue Loctite (it comes in the red vial) just to be safe. Any opinion on doing this?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Yep, you got it. That is how mine are mounted. You can forgo the loctite.

Go easy when tightening the FH onto the crush washer.  Once compressed, the washer doesn't expand back very easily.

Also (and this may not matter to you), crush washers are "fatter" on one side/end.  IMHO, it looks a bit cleaner when the thin side is towards the rear and the fat side is towards the muzzle.

Here's a pic:

Indexing a Vortex or Phantom is cosmetic, you're not going to influence your dust signature.  Try it both ways by just tipping the rifle.  25% straight down or 50% at 45° to each side.  On the second case you're putting twice the blast into the ground.

I see your point Chuck. That makes complete sense. I'll just index if for cosmetics then and set the vents at 12, 3, 6 and 9.

I recommend having the slots 45 degrees off-center, as you originally intended.  This will keep the gasses escaping from the slots from being vented into your line of sight.

Good point Troy. Thank you bringing that up. BTW, I recall reading a thread regarding how changing a FH would affect POI. I can't find the thread but is this statement correct? I've got a Vortex on this upper right now but the Vortex is going onto my 20" upper. If this is true, I'm going to wait to put the Phantom on until I the day before I go the range next week.

TIA.

I agree, I had mine done with the slots at 2, 4, 7, 10. looked cool and kept the blast from going straight up into the sight picture.
