Hi everyone I'm about to begin my first retro project. I plan on building a Vietnam War, SOG style carbine. My question involves parts. I'm not that hung up on having every single nut and bolt authentic, I do however want to do it right. Are the older style, " shiny" hand guards and aluminum butt stocks still available. If I remember correctly the aluminum stocks had a coating on them that seemed to fall off in places. Can they be powder coated to look right? I hope you all don't mind me asking a lot of questions as I start this project. Thanks in advance.

I have seen powder coat look good, and look crappy. Most people hit it with either anodizing and a coat of Krylon Fusion or alumihide etc. The two aluminum stocks I have had didnt impress me fit/noise wise so I got rid of them just like the military did. A little krylon fusion on a plastic one looks pretty close to me with out all the clacking and noise. |
| I'm certainly no authority of retro, as I am just now undertaking my first retro build also, a 607. The aluminum stocks with the acetate coating are not available new. You'll have to keep an eye on the EE, Gunbroker, and other classified sites to "luck" into one. Plan on 250+ for an original Colt. The 6 hole shiney hg's, I am not sure about. Good luck on your build. Playing seek and find is half the fun of doing a retro build. Or at least that is what I keep telling myself. |

Trimdad, do you know what time period the castle nut changed from the spanner nut with holes to the one like what is on your picture? (kicking around an idea in my head) not trimdad but my observation has been the change occurred when they switched from the car style stock to the m4 ribbed style. i don't think i've seen a colt car stock with a castle nut. |

When I find one I'll get it, back plate and buffet anodized all Proper like |

If you are lucky, you might find a good retro stock copy at Essential Arms. One never knows whether or not they have them in stock.
