I currently have an A2 upper receiver and plan on swapping it out for a flat top. I know i have to remove the barrel to make the swap but do i have to take off the front sight post or can that just stay on the barrel during the swap?

Front sight post stays on the barrel. you need to remove the gas tube, which is pinned in place in the front sight base, before you can remove the barrel nut.

Drive out the small roll pin in the FSB with a hammer and punch. Remove the gas tube toward the rear.
