What is the primary advantage of a piston operated AR? Less fouling?
Less fouling in the Bolt Carrier Group and the receiver. The fouling still has to go somewhere though, but an efficient piston design allows the majority of the fouling to be vented from the weapon which usually results in much longer intervals between full cleanings. On my piston weapons I clean the bore and chamber every 1000 rounds or so and then clean the piston system itself every 3000 to 4000 rounds.
IThe primary reason to go gas piston is reliabilty .With a gas piston rifle , you could drop the rifle in mud , dirt or water . Shake it out and keep on shooting . With a DI system if you didn't clean the rifle after being exposed to mud , dirt or water after dropping it . There is a very good possiblilty of the rifle blowing up in your face. As mention before the gas piston rifle's receiver and bolt will be cleaner , cooler and will last alot longer before replacement .Than would a DI system.
I am a sicko i guess and enjoy cleaning my DI but sometimes there just is no time for me. I had no idea it ran THAT much cleaner. Is there any other noticeable differences in terms of shooting the Piston vs. DI?? I am looking at Stag, CMMG and Spkes w/ AA piston upper. Budget is 2k.

Its not so much the idea of cleaning the weapon, its the idea that all that heat and carbon is being shot into the insides on the parts you rely on the most .You are already fighting the dusty, cold ,wet environments on the battle field why not shoot carbon into the action, it just doesnt make sense to me, all other battle rifles have tryed to do the opposite. |
