I just installed my first gas block.
I am about to take it to the range to test fire the rifle.

Is it dangerous if for some reason I did not line it up properly?

It will just fail to chamber a new round/eject, correct?

Thanks.

An improper installation could cause some cycling issues. It also could cause your gas tube to be out of place in the receiver.  Open the receivers and move the bolt carrier in and out of battery with your finger. Do this slowly to see if your gas key is making correct contact over the gas tube. It should go into battery without binding on the gas tube .

I was wondering if the tub itself is not properly aligned over the hole in the barrel .

The hole in the tube is oversized. What kind of gas block do you have? Post a pic if you can.

I have the YH specter:

I live in a ban state so I had to get something that would fit around my barrel to avoid disturbing the permanently fixed muzzle break.

Unfortunately I had to dremel down the gas block and round the edges to fit my quad rail over it, which resulted in the gas block being permanently fixed to the rifle as well. I will have to get a new gas block and dremel it off if it needs replacing.

I will post pics in a few minutes.

Lets just take it from the top of how to install one correctly.

With the block off the barrel, mark the top dead center of the barrel gas port on the barrel should.  This will allow you to use the gas tube to align the block with the barrel gas port.

Next before you install the block, mic the distance from the barrel shoulder to the center of the gas port, then compare it to the distance from the back of the block to the center of the block gas passage.  The reason here are some blocks are meant to be used with a front guard ring, and when they are not used with such blocks, you have to hold the block off the barrel shoulder to center the block passage to the center of the barrel gas port.

Now with the above done, install the block on the barrel and remember to red loctite the allen screws so they don't back out.  If at a later date you need to remove the block, use a torch to break the loctite bond so you can remove the screws/removed the block.

Lastly, once you have the block installed, you need to make sure that the end of the gas tube is aligned with the carrier key.   If you can remove the hand guards, then you can tweak the tube over the barrel.  If not, the tweak the end of the tube within the receiver void.   As for how to align, carrier alone without the bolt, in the upper receiver with the last inch'ish of travel forward to see/feel if the tube is entering the key cleanly.
