Getting ready to start changing over my 16" heavy barrel middy w/6 position stock to a precision bench rifle with a 20" match grade barrel and Magpul PRS stock.  I'd like to be able to shoot it while I'm putting away money for the PRS and rifle tube/buffer/spring.  Am I correct in that as long as the extension/buffer/spring combo matches (all carbine or all rifle) the rifle will function with either a mid length or rifle length gas system?

It should function.

I think the carbine stock and 20" barrel look weird.

Looks aside, it should function...

Gas enters the tube through a little hole in the barel and is then routed to the gas key on the bolt carrier.

So the hole is sized different for each type of system...carbine...mid...rifle...I'm skipping the pistols...yah! Get over it...

So the time from when the bullet reaches the hole and to leaving the barrel...this is the critical deal...

Now, in theory all thing look good on paper...but not 100%...

If your setup works, great, function check it many times...but about 25% of the time you may have to play buffer games to get it running perfect.

If someone has a high speed camera befriend them...

Else, like me and most people don't have that luxury all the time...

Now I'm assume you have known good mags, mag catch, bolt catch...etc and just changed the buffer spring and tune.

Run it with one shell...
Did the bolt hold back?
No, your not getting enough gas to the bcg, a too stiff buffer spring, or too heavy a buffer...or a bad round...try another before panic...

Yes, Great enough gas to get the bolt moving back to cycle.

Next, two rounds...
Did both rounds fire one per pull?
No...misfeed...or a double boom?
Double boom...if you at a public range...hide them leave before the president takes your machine gun...:) but down ply it pack up and go somewhere private to sort it out.
Misfeed...this is where the issue really lies...get your detective hat on...

If you have the top round in the mag scratched or even crushed by bolt partway in...your gun is cycling too fast...

You need to slow down that carrier...it is cycling to fast for its own good...

Two ways to slow it down are...
1-Less Gas...not easy to do unless you have an adjustable gas system...
2-More mass in the system...we could grap a wheel weight of of grandads 36 ford he wouldn't miss it...and super glue it on the bcg...it would fill up that useless depression on the bolt carrier...
Seriously, weight needs to be introduced into the moving system parts...

The parts that move are the bcg, buffer, and spring...I would only mess with one of them...the buffer...

Now not that long ago I was schooled on buffers myself...on my gun...how embaressing...

Now there is a reason every larger company sells and uses different buffers...the cure what ails the ar's.

I've only had one PITA and that is when I got schooled big time...

Buffers will tune your rifle without going with an adjustable gas block or other drastic measures...

I stock standard buffers, h1, h2, h3 buffers in my build room to have available to tune rifles...

If you have an empty round still in there...clean the factory lube out of the bore after driving out the spent casing...most mfg leave a nasty grease on the barrel that tends to keep cases from being pulled out after a few rounds...

Sorry about the 275 word dissertation...

But I've got a cold, can't sleep, and having a piss poor day...I am 1 item short from my last two builds...I ran out of bolt catch buffers...I think it was the professor with a lead pipe in my build room...he took all my bolt catch buffers...that a clue :)

Seriously I just placed an order for 4 bolt catch buffers...the cc processing fee will take more than the order...my local gunsmith is out as well...and my optics planet order it being held up for a 40mm lense cover...

Anyhow, there should be a buffer oracle!

Well I'd say 2 cents...but I just feel that would be too much...

You are correct.
Receiver extensions are independent of gas system choice. Match up your stock components as you indicated and you'll be gtg.

I agree, but its either look weird and be able to shoot the 20" or look good with the 16" and wait till I can scrounge the PRS, tube, buffer and spring.
