| I have some 604/SP1 clones, and I need to sling them. What would be the 'most accurate' sling that I can get new that will fit the bill? |
|
So did the USMC, so not so fast guys. WOW - after I posted this I checked out the link and guess what the listing is for? Actually that's a great price. I think I might buy a couple myself. Oh - and SP1 slings are different - like black 601 slings, not the same as these. |
| I believe it was around the time the M16A1 was adopted - I'm sure the answer is in the archives. I distinctly recall several different USMC veterans referring specifically to them at different times in differetn threads - enough so I take it for granted now. They were specific about them NOT being silent slings. If any USMC vet from that era is out there and would like to correct me or comment, please do. |

Yeah, but no info regarding black M1 slings tho.No one had definite info on them at the time. |
Well, I just spent a little time looking through the archives, but no luck. I believe the USMC used both green and black slings, but no idea as to timeline. I specifically recall a vet talking about this...maybe he'll jump in here. I only went back to 2008 - might have to go back futher. 3 pages of 'sling threads ! I'll do some more research and get back with you, but hearing it from 2 or 3 different sources pretty much made it a fact for me. IIRC the one guy got a little hot under the collar when it was suggested that he was thinking about a silent sling. It was quite awhile ago though. I'll keep looking for a link. When I sold the 604 the sling went with it. Very nice though - definitely cotton, surplus marks, (anchor) and not an SP1 sling. The guy at the gun show had a box of them. I'm guessing since the silent sling came out in what? '74? I'm guessing they ended up with a lot of extra cotton slings in the mid-seventies. Why would the USMC use black slings? Why did they use 782 gear? Issue a different flak jacket? Replace birdcage flashhiders with three prongs? They 'had their reasons'. |

Well from 78-82 in the Corps I never can recall seeing a black sling. But like someone else said, it was a long time ago. I served in the Corps from 78-84. I can only recall using the OD Nylon sling. Like I said, this would be earlier. Haven't had any time to go through the archives yet. Right now, I need a damn nap. |

I served in the US Army from the mid 1970's through the late 1980's, the only slings I remember using on the M16 rifles were the black silent slings. Did I say Army? I found this: htto://www.ar15.com/forums/t_3_118/472857_.html and will keep looking. FWIW I found a post by Bill Ricca saying he never has seen one and he's seen a lot of surplus stuff obviously. What's interesting is the sling which is said to be cotton, may not be cotton at all - but it's NOT a silent sling. From everything I can find, it's an M16A2 sling used by the USMC - as you will read in this thread I posted (sorry - too early for me to try and make it hot. aMaybe someone else can.) Hope this helps - off to work.
