I am looking into a new Muzzle Break/Comp (NOT FLASH HIDER, I do live in the Greater Soviet Republic of New York after all). I currently only have experience with the YHM Phantom 5M1 (Link, second one down) and it is pretty loud. Does anyone have any experience with other Brakes or any comparison of them?
Thanks

When talking about muzzle devices, quiet and muzzle brake are on opposite ends of the spectrum. A brake by its very nature directs the gases up or up and back in a Chevron pattern. This makes for an effective brake but an effective brake is not typically quiet. Much of the noise is directed in the vicinity of the shooter as opposed to down range. If someone knows of a device that does not subscribe to this premise I would really like to hear about the product.

+1 Battle Comp

Here's some thread links, I don't have one yet but from the other members reviews it looks like it's better than the other muzzle brakes in the market in terms of reduced recoil and noise.

I would also suggest to go to YouTube and search for Battle Comp videos, they have several there and it seems nice.

I'd probably be concerned if the ban state would see the battle comp as a brake and not a flash hidder since it does not look like a typical brake.

Best I know of is spend the extra money and get a can.  A effectitve comp will be loud and the shooter never notices the comp blast when the timer goes beep.

An effective muzzle brake/ comp would control the muzzle flip and the shooter could just hold the firearm with one hand and fire full auto, see the Battle Comp video link below.

The flash of the Battle Comp is also less than other muzzle brakes it's more like the standard A2 FS.

BattleComp looks good to go. According to their site it is CA legal as a Brake/Comp so I would assume it would be legal here in NY as long as its pinned.
Thanks for the suggestions

If you want quieter for the shooter, perhaps consider a CQB type, cone or downrange venting break.  These won't reduce muzzle rise and felt recoil quite as well as a standard type break, but they will direct the noise downrange and away from the shooter.  Technically it's not any quieter, but the shooter perceives it to be quieter as the noise is directed away.

that video would be a who lot better if it included a target as he was shooting.

Those videos mainly shows how the carbines doesn't flip its muzzles when using the Battle Comp.

There are other videos that shows the actual target, the effective muzzle brake/ comp would have more hits at the target.

I use the FSC556 on my post ban builds and find the added "noise" is just a bit over an A2 flash hider.  It's definitely quieter than most brakes.  The BATFE letter assures you are using a device that is NY AWB compliant.

If you want your gun to be as quiet as possible, but can't have a flash hider, you could just use a thread protector.

All brakes are loud.

I will respectfully disagree with this statement. My 18" gun with a FSC556 is worlds louder than my 12.5 gun with a flash hider. Normally, shorter guns are louder.
