I'm new to this and hope to have my first build complete by mid December. Thanks to the friendly folks and vast amount of info/pics here on the forums, I'm not sure of anything other than one AR just won't be enough. For my first I'm thinking of sticking an RRA "Elite CAR A4 Upper" 16" mid-length on my MEGA lower. What if any advantages/disadvantages are there to the RRA Detachable Carry Handle? Probably will do all other RRA parts except the MEGA Lower primarily because of RRA and "Legal Transfers" reputation. Thoughts? Much Thanks!!!!! |

If you like Pete, then you should do business with him. RRA makes a very good product, but that odd carry handle isn't liked by most people here who have gotten one. You might want to consider getting a BUIS instead, which would save you money in the long run if you plan on using an optic. |
| That's my exact rifle! RRA upper and Mega lower is a very nice combination, especially in midlength. If it goes together as nicely, and shoots as well as mine did, you're in for a treat. Personally, while many here aren't into the RRA tac handle, I actually like mine. I don't run optics but they can be used on the tac handle. I think the big reason some don't like them is the issue of co-witness. This handle won't allow some optics to co-witness with the iron sights. The other gripe is that it can't really be used as a handle as there is no room for your hand. Since I've never been fond of carrying my gun by its sights, I find it is well made, works well and gives me another option for sight level if I choose to use optics in the future. |
| Again, I'm new at this. What is co-witness? Any idea what type of optics will fit on this particular RRA upper? No problem with the Mega lower fitting to the RRA upper? I carried a '16 for a bit more than 20 years and never once did I carry it by the "carry handle" so thats not an issue with me. Much thanks for the reply. |

Co-witness means the iron sights are visible through the optics and can be used if the optic fails. As Teknic mentioned the Aimpoint (and Aimpoint copies) seem to co-witness with the RRA tac handle. There may be others as well. They would just have to sit low enough that you could use the iron sights as a back up. If you aren't using optics then the argument is moot. If you're thinking of something bigger or taller than Aimpoint you may consider a different rear sight arrangement. Personally, I'd rather spend the $300-$500 required for a high-end optic on another AR instead. My Mega lower fit perfectly with my RRA upper. The RRA lower parts kit was also a breeze to install. I've been extremely impressed with the quality of both Mega and RRA. |
