Just bought a new rail and I am looking for some rail covers for it, the only thing I have experience using are magpul XTM panels.I am not to fond of those as they add to much bulk to the rail IMO.So I was looking at the Daniel defense ladder type, magpul lader type, Troy Battle Rail Covers, and the Tango Down SCAR. Is there any clear one that is superior or I should stay away from or are they pretty much all the same?

ETA pics of type of covers on rifle would be helpful as well

The SCAR covers are a little bit thinner than standard TangoDown panels when installed, and the texture is super grabby even when wet.

I prefer troy rail covers. I use them on all of my rails. But, I also paid $12shipped for a set of 3 back when a member was selling a bunch.  I've had ladder covers, but all there really good for is just covering the "grooves" in the rail.

How many sides of a Carbine rail will the index clips cover?

I am going to have a VFG so I want some thing on the bottom and the sides to protect my hands from heat and have some thing comfortable

Count the number of spaces on the rail that you want to cover.  I bet 72 will cover all of the sides and the bottom with a vertical grip.  Do you want to cover the top as well?

Here is an old pic of one of my rifles.  It is a carbine length gas system with an Omega-x FSB rail.

It has Magpul XTMs on the front, LaRue Clips on the back half sides and bottom, and ladders on the top.

I have a carbine length DD Omega rail and I use LaRue index clips.  I didn't even need the entire can.

I really like them.

If my calculations are right you should have 20 left over, after you completely cover rail, even more if u use a VG ect...

all of them I think

There are 72 pieces in a kit and I really like mine super low profile.

I currently have a combination of Troy 6" and 3" covers in front of the FSB and Ergo (the ones that came with my DDM4) on the portions of the rail that are left beyond the Troy rail covers.  Really liking that combination so far.  Rail covers where I normally have my support hand and ladders to cover/protect the remaining sections of rail.

I've also tried the LWRC rails.  They are narrower than the Troy rail covers and probably a little lighter.  I probably would still have them on if they offered a smaller section, like the Troy covers.

I looked into the LaRue clips and the handstop, but haven't gotten around to trying that yet.  Seems like they offer maximum flexibility.

I have the LaRue Index Clips on a DD Omega 7.0, and there are more than enough clips in the package to cover all four rails completely and still have some left over.

Troy battle covers and Magpul XTM have the same profile. Troy maybe a little thinner. I have both so you are probably looking for something thinner.

Can anybody verify the thickness between Tango Down Scar panels and the Troy versions?
11/8/2011 10:36:26 AM EDT
[#32]
There are 72 rail sections on a carbine length handguard. That's why LaRue includes 72, ladder style covers are 18 sections long to cover one complete side and XTM panels come in a 4 pack to cover a complete side.

I use longer rails personally, and depending on the rail, I prefer different covers. On a thinner rail like the URX II or Centurion, I prefer KAC rail covers that are sanded down and stippled. For a RIS II, my rail of choice, I prefer ladder style covers since the rail is a bit thinker than some others.

I have only handled the SCAR panels, but never owned them. They're pretty decent but I can get the KAC covers thinner. The standard Tango Down covers are way too thick for me. As for the LaRue index clips, I really would liketo give them a try. I hear they are very secure and low profile. This is the reason I only used XTM panels for about a few months. They got knocked off a couple times and that was it for me, and I tried different sets so it wasn't just the ones I had.

I like the KAC panels too, as they were free from the Army, but they don't lock down on a lot of non-KAC rails.  Rail covers are some of the most overpriced kit out there.

I recently picked up some pro-mag rail covers.  They look like the KAC covers, but lock down like the Tango down covers... and cost about $4 each, instead of $10 or $15 for most others.  Midway has them.  I feel a lot better about hacking them up when they are $4, too.

You’re definitely going to be happy with the Larue Index clips, especially over the UTG covers.  I actually had a buddy I convinced to make the same trade a while back.  I have black and just ordered OD Green. Those babies stay on tight!   I have never had a problem with mine.

That was one thing I didn't like about the KAC panels, plus even on KAC rails they only locked in certain positions. Then, someone showed how to lock them down anywhere by taking a screwdriver, or similar tool, and prying up on the locking tab and it locks down tight.

Right now, I'm content with ladder style covers until I get around to tryin the LaRue clips.

For the users of the LaRue index clips, do they offer ant heat protection? I'm currently running ladders on my Omega and sometimes it gets pretty hot.
