the rail covers shouldn't be able to scratch up your rails, they are made of plastic.  All you need to do is but the top part of the rail cover on and then push down to snap the bottom part in.  It takes a little bit of force but it shouldn't be too hard to get on.

Are you meaning Magpul XT rail covers?

I have a TROY MRF-C on mine and what I did was cut one section of the covers and that made them fit.

Just take a panel section and then it'll fit.

Yep,stickman there Magpul XT. Guess I need to clear up the scratching part. What I meant was by using a pic or small screw driver to caox them on.

My rail covers were denting my rails...so I stopped using the hammer to install

Some covers just need that extra effort to put on.  Try pushing in the middle to strech the "clamping"portion out.

Put one side on, then put your thumbs on that side and press into the rail and towards the other side.  The cover will bow in the center and snap over the other side of the rail with enough pressure.  I can't imagine needing tools.
