Ok, I have a Naive question here about rail systems.  I am not new to the M-16 series of rifles but I am now jumping into the civilian side with a couple of personal colts, a LE6920 and a 6920 HB.  Now I need a rail and I am not tracking on why so many folks go to the more exotic rails as opposed to just getting the Mil-Spec Knight rail that always fits.  I have a knight rail on my issue M-4 here in Afghanistan and those things are just about indestructible.  If I told all the times I have seen M-4s abused beyond belief along with the rails, I'd probably be called a liar...but the rails seem to outlast the rifles.  I've looked for reasons to get a better rail than my knight and I just can't find one.  So why get away from Mil-Spec?

Is Free Floating that big of a deal?  I can't say that it is since I have engaged targets on the range out past 300 yards with my ACOG and it wasn't a problem...

The cost of a KAC RAS and most FF systems is the same, so many opt for the FF.  FF takes a little more work, but the benefit is there - it's just a question of whether you are a good enough shot to see the benefit.

My choice is always FF - almost always KAC of DD, just because I don't think it is a big deal to remove a muzzle device and FSB to get the FF tube on.  I don't shoot well enough to see the benefit, but I strive to.
