I wanted to add a rail system but had a few questions: Which companies would guys recomend? .................LaRue, Troy, Daniel Defense, KAC, Yankee Hill Easiest to install? .............Troy and Yankee Hill makes a replacement 2 piece Quad Rails. Most others you have to remove and replace the barrel nut, not that hard though What does free floating mean? .......................The railed hanguard does not touch any part of the barrel. looking for a reliable product, but dont want to break the bank at the same time. .....................I suggest you look at Yankee Hill Machine then Any help would be great. |

I wanted to add a rail system but had a few questions: Which companies would guys recomend? Easiest to install? For a free floating system the Troy, MI, and SIR are all pretty easy to install. I prefer the Troy & MI types as they are lighter and less expensive than the SIR. Between the two I like the slightly heavier Troy as it has protrusions that prevent the rail system from rotating if it takes a really hard knock (it's more of a warm fuzzy as the chances of either slipping are very small). What does free floating mean? It means the rails put no pressure on the barrel. All attachment is through the barerl nut and/or upper receiver. This allows the barrel to 'float' and gives you consistant results no matter how much pressure from the sling, VFG, or Bipod you have. Free Floats are useful for precision shooting at extended ranges. If you're just looking for a light and/or VFG to attach to your carbine, then a less expensive non free float system will work fine (like the MI or YHM). |
