I've just slapped together my first AR. As i assume many of us feel, it's not even close to being done though it is fire-able(My wife thinks ive lost my mind).  Anyway, I have a Troy Alpha 11' rail and have an idea that I'm going to try implement but was wondering if I could get some feedback from people who have significant experience with these rails.

How much space is there between the inside rail wall and the gas block/barrel at it's narrowest regions?

its pretty thin, mostly at the gas block.

There are many brands of gas blocks so size I'd say will vary. I have a BCM gas block with my Troy VTAC and have ample room.

ETA: I'm running a LW barrel, so I don't know if the .750 vs .625 GB would affect the OD of the GB.

It totally depends on the dimensions of the gas block you have. With the YHM clamp-on style block, there is approximately 0.21" clearance at the sides, and 0.010" at the bottom; with the Midwest Industries block, there is 0.20" at the sides, and 0.050" at the bottom. With either, clearance at the bottom will not permit a rail section to be used under the block.

What's the idea you're considering?

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm throwing around the idea of weaving/wrapping the rail in FDE/Black Paracord instead of the typical squid grip.  Ever seen it done?

Hmmm.......in for results and pics.

I may be missing something but what does wrapping the rail with paracord have to do with the space between a barrel and the inside of the rail?  Maybe I misread this.

Not sure how well it would disperse heat either. I would think you would have to wrap it tight for it to be comfortable. Why wrap it in anything?

Yup.  Either gloves, or barehands.  No biggie.

tried it with 550 on a vtac/alpha, looked good, felt good (little more bulk but still very thin). I only did about 1/4 of a 13" cause it was taking forever(and I was too lazy to go to garage to get allen wrenches to take the damn thing off). I ended up taking it off to install iwc flush cups anyway.

if you do it, do yourself a favor and take the tube off to thread it through.

I like the look as well. Wonder how close the cord comes to the barrel on the inside? I'd probably catch my rifle on fire and end up with a big gooey mess.

I got a place here in Raleigh that is willing to make a trade with me for my 11" alpha for a 13"; i would assume money on my side.  Either way, i like how the paracord looks in that pick. Now im thinking about getting the seekins muzzle piece in black since the KX3 isnt going to work like I wanted it to.

I know it's not my Troy rail but that's bc I traded it away for the Samson evolution. Thoughts?
