I think that with building your own, the advantage is that you can choose every single piece. Meaning, everything that is on the rifle you decided to put it there. No need to change parts off of a stock, off the shelf AR-15 because the handguard/rail, pistol grip, stock, charging handle, flash hider, etc is "wrong".
Buy once, cry once. I've read that countless times on this forum and have come to agree. |

Cost is not a factor in "rating" a build and most builds cannot even be "rated". Only the builder can really rate the build based on his or her satisfaction with the end result. As for cost to build vs buy, if all you want is a basic AR, then buying off the shelf can suit you fine. If you know you want exact parts, building will make sure you don't waste money replacing things. That's just the surface of building too.
If you wanted to get specific about trying to rate builds, it would need to look at target usage at the very least. To factor cost, you'd probably have to look at the builder's budget and they'd have to mention if they stayed within it or not. |

Is it as inexpensive as an off the shelf AR? Nope! But its exactly what I want, and I had a blast building it. What YOU like, may be far different from what someone ELSE likes, or what I like for that matter. If YOU are happy with it, and it fits YOUR needs, thats all that really matters! |
