Ok, finally sold off the money pit firebird. Wife is letting me replace my MaTen. At a much cheaper alternative unfortunately.
I've narrowed it down. It's between the Armalite DEF10, and the AR10A2 carbine. I can't see why there is an almost 600$ difference. Certainly a trigger and front sight cannot justify that. I've also read the DEF10 comes with a melonite barrel, and then others say chrome lined. Armalite site says chromed lined, but reports say it was chromed at first but now melonite, then others say the opposite. Which is it? I'm wanting a good foundation. Are the receivers the same forgings, ate the bcg the same? I think the DEF10 has a light barrel, is it melonite or chromed? I haven't heard back from Armalite with these same questions. I always like asking both, real world users and MFGs customer service. If everything is the same but the barrel and trigger, the no brainer would be the DEF10 as i plan to swap the barrel out anyway. On the other hand, i do plan on using an Armalite A2 front sight for the new barrel i get. Basically, is the AR10A2 worth the extra 500$? |

I'm not wanting the 20" A2, they don't make that guy anymore. They have an A2 carbine, with flat top receiver, and A2 style front sight.

Just received reply from Armalite. All parts are the same except the trigger and A2 style sight.
Receivers, barrel, bcg, etc are all the same. There was misinformation about the barrel being melonite, was never an option. Has been chromed some beginning. Also, they are discontinuing the AR10A2 carbine style. They have some left in stock, but at full price with no discount. It would be cheaper to buy the DEF10, and upgrade the trigger and front sight. So, that answered my questions pretty much. No differences except 2 stage trigger, A2 sight, and extra $$$ added on top just because. Now, just gotta find one in stock. |

Yeah, it's an awesome deal. Great foundation, can sell off parts or keep them for spares.
It's really about the receivers for me. I'm gonna swap the barrel, put a fixed stock, and go to town. I'm wanting a 20" melonite CMV barrel. I can't find one, so i think I'm just gonna get an Armalite barrel and be done with it. They really are great barrels. I don't want stainless, it's not necessary for what i want. Anyways, I'm sold. I'll be putting the order in as soon as the dictator allows. |
| I have one of these - mid length gas system, chrome lined light contour barrell. I like it very much. Put a different Magpul stock on mine and a Redfield Revolutions TAC MOA scope. I've never deer hunted with an AR before but may take it out this next season. Earl |

I have an AR10 A2 20 inch rifle and really like it, it is very very accurate. My load is RL 12 and Hornady 155 gr Amax bullets. I still have about 3/4th of a 4 lb jug left of the RL 12, after that it's load development time again. I have had this AR10 about 10 years.

well....with a Midwest Ind.( MLOK or keymod) or Troy 15" free float rail, you can still add iron sights, and have more sight radius too. 
also, Re; your original post,....My DEF10 has a chrome lined barrel Armalite told me the DEF10 is the same parts as there regular AR10 lineup, upper and lower receivers, bolt/carrier groups etc. It sure looks that way to me. This thing looks and feels wonderful |
