Dumb question here, fellows.

This may belong in the reloading forum, but it applies to factory ammo, too.

Was the AR designed to fire one bullet wieght over another? Such as 55 gr. and not 62 gr.?

I just finished loading some ammo. I used some 62 gr. pull-downs, crimped on the cannaleur. They cycle fine, but it seems they JUST SO fit in the mag (no room for error).

I know, I know, if it works let it alone. But I was just curious. I thought the military issue was 62 gr, or maybe some mags allow more clearance than others (this is a Bushy mag).

Thanks.

Have you measured the OAL?  Also, just looking at the magazine and bullet clearence, it's really hard to tell wheather you have .005", .010", .020" by eye sight alone.

Speer manual has 62 grainers listed at 2.255 OAL. My loads measure right on that. Again, they are seated so I can crimp in the cannelure.

You're correct about the 2.255 from the Speer manual.  The maximum recomended OAL is 2.260 for .223.

The ID of 2 of my GI mags are 2.280"(+/- .002) and my Thermolds are around 2.305".  You probably have over .025" clearance which should be plenty. Since they are not jaming this should be a good indication.

Thanks for the help, Rambosky. As I said, as long as it works, don't mess with it. But I was still curious.
