[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Receiver Swap

Is there anything to what I'm hearing about it not being a good idea to swap a receiver, but not swap the bolt carrier group with it?

I'm working with a Bushmaster with a 16" barrel and handled top. I'm wanting to go to the flat top receiver to bring my optics down to a more natural position. I'm happy with my barrel and can't see making the investment for a new upper, and dealing with the hassle of selling my other when good receivers can be had for $125. I'm looking at the DPMS Sportical receiver for its clean profile (link below). All I keep hearing is that I need to swap the whole upper, but to be quite frank I don't have that kind of money to throw at it right now. What are some things I should be aware of going forward on this?

I'm not sure why someone would say not to swap out the upper receiver. Keep the barrel and BCG, and swap it over to a flat top.

If you don't have the tools or knowledge of how to remove the barrel and reinstall it on a new receiver, then it'll quickly raise the cost past the cost of buying a whole new upper.

I was quoted one hour's labor at $35 for my local gun smith to knock this out.

$35 is about what ADCO charges for disassembly/assembly of an upper, so that price is decent. One reason I've used ADCO's services in the past is that local gunsmiths seem to think 6-8 weeks is good turnaround.

And ditto on keep the BCG.

Bolts get married to barrels. Upper receiver change doesn't matter.
