I have read the FAQ in the AR 10 section and my recoil spring is an AR 15 spring NOT an AR 10 spring.  What happens is I fire a round and the empty case does NOT extract.  The bolt then can not chamber another round as the chamber has a empty case in it.  Is this a problem with the recoil spring being too tight or a match type chamber that is too tight?  All help would be much appreciated.  Thanks again

The buffer spring has to be the proper length for the application.
Carbine length, or rifle length. The rifle length being the longer.
The length and weight of the buffer is also matched as to carbine, or rifle.

Now as to putting an AR15 buffer and spring in an AR10. The AR10 firing
a 7.62 NATO should function, but would probably result in a severe  recoil
and chewed up brass.

*Check your extractor & spring.

What company built your rifle?
What type of stock? A-2 or collapsible type?
Will the bolt lock back on an empty mag?
Did you lube the BCG really well?
Is this a brand new rifle? What does the empty cartridge look like? Is the extractor tearing the rim ?

And aother assumption in the discussion is that we are talking about a DI rig.
Can we be sure that the gun is sending enough gas back down the tube?
Has this rig ever functioned with any ammo, or is it just a particular ammo?

Thanks Guys
1st:  Kacee  It is a rifle and the buffer is proper for a rifle.  I have already changed the extractor.  Spring next.

rrjacobo95269 The rifle was built by a police armorer.  It is built on a DPMS lower.  It has an A2 stock and the bolt will lock back on an empty mag.  If opened slowly (like to lock the bolt back) the charging handle is tight going back into place.  The bolt carrier group is well lubed.  It is a brand new rifle.  The guy who built it ran 20 Wolf thru it with out a problem, I tried some Monarch (steel) and still had problems with it.  In looking for extractor marks it appears the extractor is not going over the case rim.  I did (and now again) learn just because it is new it is not necessarily good.  I think I need a new extractor.
I'll let you guys know.  It may take me a little while as I have to get the extractor, install and shoot it, AND I'M IN RETAIL!
Thanks again

If the extractor spring has a black or blue insert remove that insert,it just sounds like your extractor is pretty tight. Also try some different ammo. I am assuming its a 762/.308. Clean the chamber really good, use a chamber brush real fine polish. Do you have a spare bolt assy.? if you do try it.  I should clarify one question. When you fire one round will the bolt lock on the empty mag.Sorry if I confused you. One thing you should check. I the gas block seated correctly on the gas port?

RegionRat: I would guess that it is having enough "blow back" as the bolt does come back and pick up another round.  I've tried 4 different types of ammo and none of them extract.

rrjacobo95269 Yes it is 308.  I'll also check to see if the spring has any inserts

Thanks again

In working on the extractor problem, I tried a new Winchester commercial 150gr cartridge to check the extractor marks.  In cambering the round, then extracting, the BCG would only move back about 1/2 inch and then wouldn't move.  I literately had to force the BCG back with a screw driver.  So that tells me the problem is a too tight chamber.  Any other ideas?
Thanks and Merry Christmas

What does the cartridge look like when you do get it out? Is the cartridge changing shape (out of round) as it is feeding? When firing it should stretch the case to fit the chamber and fix this. Do you have go or no-go gauges? Can you drop a cartridge directly into the breach fully and then lift it out with a nail or screw driver? (Obviously this is easy with the upper off and the BCG out.)

Total guess but your buffer spring might not be strong enough to fully seat the BCG into battery. Your discriptions of the problem/s are a little vague.

x2 on Clean the entire upper. The whole thing, even the little parts of the BCG and the passages. well oil. Strip the breach/ barrell with copper solvent to make sure it is clear.

I do not have go/nogo gauges.  I have dropped the rifle by a gunsmith buddy to check that very thing.  I did not see that the cartridge was out of round when I had trouble extracting it.  I did see scratches on the side/neck though.  The problem is with extracting the fired case, the rifle seems to go into battery OK.  I don't know exactly how deep the cartridge should go into the chamber when dropping it in with  the upper separated and the BCG out.  I'm just not that familiar with the chamber/barrel on an AR.  Inexperience on my part.  But when upper and lower are separated and BCG is out the case does not just fall out when muzzle is pointed up after the cartridge has been seated by the recoil spring.

If you are shooting lacquered 7.62X51 in a tight 308 chamber they will stick from the burnt residue left in the chamber.
Not to mention that 7.62X51 has a neck angle that is .013" longer then .308

I have tried Venezuelan and German 7.62X51 and neither of them have worked.  I also had Winchester and HSM match commercial ammo not work.  It seems to me the problem is the chamber.  Could it be anything else?
Thanks

Had a buddy with go/nogo gauges check it out.  Go went, nogo did not.  He said scratches on extracted case showed binding.  Going to try stronger extraction spring.  I've seen scratches like this on other cases (rifles) but not had the problem with those rifles not extracting.
