I'm looking at buying an universal cleaning kit (cleaning kit with brushes, rods, and jags for all the popular calibers in handguns and rifles) so I don't have several kits all over the place.  What is your opinion of those kits, and what is your recommended kit?

Get a Dewey type rod.
go to Lowes or equiv and get a 3 drawer tool BOX.
Go to midway or brownells and order all the  smaller items you will need Bore brushes, jags, loops patches.

Build your own universal kit with all the quailty parts you need and nothing you don't.

My recommendation as well.

I have been using the Hoppes Deluxe Field Cleaning Kit.  It has all of the cleaning needs for .223 rifles and pistol calibers, as well as a few shotgun brushes and eyelets. I carry the soft case in my compact range bag and still have room for eyes, ears, two pistols and ammo.  The partitioned case has plenty of extra room for additional tools and other supplies.  I have built a very functional kit using this as the core.

At home, I use a fishing-tackle box to store my firearm cleaning kit.  It has shelf-trays hold scrubbing brushes, bore brushes, chamber brushes, bore-mops, jags, and a bore-light while the deeper bottom section holds bottles of BreakFree-CLP, Remington Bore Cleaner, Shooter's Choice bore cleaner and a few other miscellaneous items.

While away from home, I use the Kleen-Bore universal field kit.  I add caliber specific bore brushes & patches and replace the Formula 3 Gun Conditioner with a small bottle of BreakFree-CLP.  I also add an extra rod section to accomodate longer barrels.

I prefer Kleen-Bore G.I. style cleaning rods for simplicity and efficient use of space (and my money).

That's what I did, put together a nice cleaning kit for home.  To keep in the range bag, I have a GI cleaning kit just for emergencies.

This. I had one I lost somewhere that was pretty sweet. I will get one again someday.

I would avoid using those cleaning kits with the flexible cables.  I've heard too many times here on the forums people breaking the cable or the patches and brass loops get stuck and they can't get them out.
