Hey guys I am looking to upgrade my range hearing protection, I shoot indoors and out. Any recommendations for electronic hearing protection would be great. I am looking at the Howard Leight Impact Sport, but would like to know if there are any better options out there in the sub $100 range. Going to take some carbine courses this spring so any help would be appreciated.

I shoot much better with a lot of hearing protection. I just double up. Either Dillon/Peltor muffs, combined with E.A.R. safety plugs (reusable 3 cone type).
edit.. sorry, missed that you were asking about ELECTRONIC muffs. I don't use/trust them, so no experience there. Sorry. |

I agree with all the recommendations posted.. I currently use my HL's more often than any other (Volume control wheel preference), but for indoor use I usually double up with some in the ear Foam (Cheap from Harbor Freight).
*I have found the knobs on many Electronic Earpro to be hit often and need readjusting quite often. Otherwise they have all pretty much worked great.. *On one pair of HL's I had, the band across the top snapped randomly at the range one day. It was hot, and I spent most of my time in the direct sunlight, but I didn't think that should have failed that way. Lifetime Warranty came in handy, just took them to Dick's (Or any retailer that carries them) and exchanged for a new set. I find them to be the most comfortable for my head type (Huge). |

I have owned a lot of electronic ear-pro over the years (Peltor Tac 6s, ComTacs, Pro-Ears, the Sordin Supreme, and TCI's DEHP).
If you only plan on casual range sessions, plinking, and just enjoying your time on the range, then just about any electronic ear pro will do just fine. If you do some low intensity shooting classes, then the Peltor 6s is a good choice (and probably the Howard Leights, too); just make sure you 'air out' the electronic innards afterwards (to keep sweat from messing up the circuit boards). These provide good hearing protection and are fairly sturdy. If you are one of those that trains hard/goes to rigorous carbine and pistol courses (or does a lot of 3Gun type stuff) on a regular basis, then you go with any of the following: Peltor ComTacs (I or II's) MSA/Sordin Supreme (air out the innards....they are not as protected as the TCI DEHP electronics) TCI's DEHP These three brands are the most robust ones out right now. They cost more, but, they hold up very well to rough and tumble classes. YMMV |

Maybe it's just me, but the HL Impact Sports don't work if I'm using a rifle. The stock just bumps the earmuff. Anyone else have that problem? I do every once in awhile...Mostly it's when the stock ends up too high on my shoulder though. Normal shooting I'm fine. |
