I have a new Bushmaster AR15 A3 M4, and I was wondering what is recommended for cleaning/maintenance before I take it to the range for the first time? I'm new to rifles of any type. I have a DVD that details breakdown and cleaning, but I'm sure that I don't have to go through that whole process for an initial shooting.

Thanks

Clean the bore , might have a spider in it  . Make sure its DRY .
Clean and strip the bolt and be sure to lube it up nice and sloppy on the out side .

I abuse my guns right from the start , run a few 30's thru pretty fast . But thats me .

Clean the barrel to make sure there is nothing in it(IE stick, metal burrs, grease, etc) and leave it pretty dry. I also lube up all moving parts, I think it helps them "break-in" and wear better.

Congrats on the new "toy".

detail breakdown and cleaning always on any new firearm. Think of it as the last saftey check before you let of 52,000 CUP next to your nose.

Absolutely!  Any new weapon needs to be disassembled, cleaned and lubed before you head to the range.

You should do a detail strip to check for any obvious problems. Remove any preservative oils from the FCG and bolt/bolt carrier, and re-lube IAW the operators instructions. Run a damp patch or two down the bore, then follow up with a dry patch to ensure the bore is clean and dry before firing.

And before I forget.............always perform a function check after re-assembly.
