Looks like I'm back to the red dot + magnifier route.  If I go with an Aimpoint, and the magnifier, am I going to be happier with the 2 MOA dot vs. 4 while magnified?

I'll probably go the full Aimpoint route, Aimpoint magnifier and LaRue mounts too.  The Eotech 557G23FTS is an attractive price point, but the 557 isn't on a quick detach mount like the magnifier.  It's going on an FS2000, and I'm not going to be able to use the BUIS unless the red dot is out of the way.  If I put a quick detach on the 557, then I doubt that it will be the proper height with the magnifier, unless I spend even more money for mounts for both...  Then that gets me to the Aimpoint's price point anyways.

You can get the 557 off with one (easy) thumb screw. The magnifier can be a FTS and you'll be all set. BTW: Someone is having a pretty good sale on the EOTech w/magnifier for about $859+/-???w/free shipping? I think it was OP but not sure.

OK, that makes the EOTech combo more tempting...  How easy is the thumbscrew to remove compared to a Larue mount with the quick release?

The EOTech Thumb screw is not designed to be taken off with thumb/finger pressure, unless you want to see it fall off while your shooting. It needs to be tightend down which means a tool to install and remove.
Do yourself a favor, get the Aimpoint with LaRue QD mounts and a 2MOA dot and you will be very happy and have a setup that will be bullet proof and reliable and hold zero and will outshoot you every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

+1.  If that screw is loose enough to unscrew with your fingers, it might last 100 rounds before it loosens and falls off the gun.

Thanks for the feedback - If you can't use the thumbscrew to quickly remove, then I'd get a quick disconnect.  But if I need to buy two with the EOTech setup, that puts me into the price of the Aimpoint setup.  If the price is about the same I'm going Aimpoint.

Don't get wrapped in price.. get the optic that you know will be on and stay on when you need it....

I thought Larue or GGGAZ has an adapter for EoTechs to switch the screws to a quick throw QD mount.

They do, but factor in the $900 is without quick detach and lens covers, add that and then you get near Aimpoints price.  THANKS for mentioning GG&G I have one of their mounts but never considered them.  Their cantilever mounts look very good, and their combo prices are a lot lower.  They are also quality mounts made in USA.  I wonder if LaRue will price match..

I know, but it's hard not too seeing it's more expensive than many rifles.  A rifle isn't required for my job, so it's a lot of money for an internet commando.

Something that I've done for myself is go back to buying with cash.  It's so much better financially, and to better know how much you're spending when it's your hard earned cash, and not just a few more numbers at a credit limit.  Look at people with their cars and houses...  Many don't even comprehend how much it is, only that it's X dollars a month.

Get the Aimpoint Micro (Tommy @ smartgunner.com) and don't look back. Do a daily search of the EE and you will turn up a good deal on an Aimpoint Magnifier. LaRue QD mount for the Micro and a Larue QD pivot mount for the magnifier are the "only" way to go to insure top tier quality.

Now let's talk "dot size." I use the above set-up, while some of my friends have "both" 2MOA and 4MOA Aimpoints Conclusions:

The 2 and 4MOA dots will "appear" brighter or dimmer as you adjust the intensity, however, they will not seem larger or smaller. With the "short" emmitter tube of the Micro when the power level is increased the dot size "APPEARES" to get larger. Power down the level and the dot size "APPEARS" to get smaller. This is a "preception" that I and other shooters have noticed. What this means, for most of the time you'll opperate with the magnifier pivoted out of the way, however, if you need to make that 200yd shot count, dial down the power a few clicks and pivot the magnifier into line and go bang.

I know people will say, "I can hit a coke can off the bearm at 200 with irons." Fourty years ago I could have made such a statement. Now with the age of my eyes and "progressive lenses" I see the bearm, but where the hell is the can you're all talking about? Pivot the magnifier in the way and YES.   ymmv I've run this set-up for 16 months now and it suits me. Just one "old mans" opinion.

I am very leery of buying used Aimpoint off the EE, especially with the fakes going around.  Maybe with the Dem & Obama scare prices went crazy.  Often Aimpoint stuff on the EE is only 10% or a little more off list price.  Aimpoint's warranty isn't transferable, so why the hell would I want to save $50 to buy used with no warranty?

10 year warranty on the red dot sights is nothing to scoff at.

I "said" get the Micro "new" from Tommy and check the EE for the magnifier. Check the seller feedback before any purchase. My Aimpoint magnifier and LaRue pivot mount from a "Gentleman" in Florida cost me about $400.00 delivered, quite a savings.

Texas_Bob,
My comments weren't directed at you...  Just echoing my observation of the EE prices on the red dots.  I haven't seen many magnifiers there, when I did a few weeks back it wasn't a spectacular deal.  But you're right about the EE being a better deal for the magnifier.  The warranty is only 1 year on it, and $400 with the Larue flip mount is a nice deal.
