I've found that red dot sights allow me to be quick and accurate with my older eyes and I have already mounted 2 on my guns.  My first question is what if any benefits are offered by the larger and heavier sights like the Aimpoint M series over the smaller lightweight T-1 series? I would really like to hear from those that have used either in harsh conditions and/or actual combat.   Secondly, just how durable are the name brand sights?   How often do they fail when dropped or exposed to percussion from an IED or under other rough conditions?  No one has to tell me that an Aimpoint or Eotech is going to be better made and more durable than a Chinese clone (by the way I have both Aimpoint and Eotech).  What I wonder and am trying to gauge is how durable are they really and how wide is the quality/durability gap between the name brands and the clones?  In many cases it would appear to me the gap is narrowing, but I would be very interested to know what peoples experience is (i.e. facts not opinions).

the larger aimpoints and the micro's are just as durable.  the main difference is the micro's are half the weight but almost twice the cost.  some of the larger models allow you to use commonly found AA batteries (which give a much longer battery life if 3 years isn't enough for you) if that matters to you (but those are more expensive than the PRO).  what you buy ends up coming down to a cost vs. benefit argument which you can decide for yourself.  I wouldn't say that the smaller aimpoints are more or less durable than the larger ones though.

how durable are they?  they have had mil contracts for 10+ years.  aimpoints and eotechs are hands down the most reliable red dot sights on the market.  they are both combat proven...not sure what else to say about that.

I would not say the gap is narrowing.  the "positive" reviews I see of people using vortex, bushnell, and primary arms sights do not subject their rifles to harsh conditions.  2 weekends a month at the range is hardly a durability test.  the day any of the current chicom red dot survives a 365 day tour to afghanistan....well I'll let you fill in something embarrassing here for me to do.  I'm that confident it won't survive.

If the question is red dot sights. and aimpoint is a option T-1 micro is the answer. Buy once cry once.

The bigger m series also has a bigger window, and may have better battery life.

The bigger window may (different for different folks, YMMV) make the dot easier to find in a stressful situation.
