For what they are SPOT does not seem to be that bad of an optic.  I wouldn't want to be using one for playing two way firing range.

I have never regretted the money I spent on my aimpoint.

+1 It is not that much of a price when you consider the piece of mind.

Do you have a specific budget?  On the low end the word has been good on the SPOT scope. Otherwise you'll find the vast majority here running Aimpoints.  I myself was reluctant to put out the money for an Aimpoint for what I essentially thought was "just a tube with a dot".  After purchasing it, I have ZERO regrets.  I would suggest checking the EE here for deals on used red dot scopes.

Here's a brief list from lowest price to highest:

SPOT (no direct link)

Burris Speed dot

Aimpoint (many models to choose from)

ETA:  Not all red dots come with a mount, so factor in purchasing a good quality mount.  You can also find these on the EE for a reasonable price.

After owning several Aimpoints (CompM, CompML2, and CompM2's) I decided to buy a lower end one that was supposed to be pretty good. It was one sold by a company called 1337tactical and is exact in almost every way to a CompM2. I payed around $100.00 after express shipping and was pretty impressed with it. It still has held up rather well (have not tried it in water yet, but will). One thing about it though is it has a battery life comarable to the CompM, which is very short (18-20 hours)

I currently run an ACOG on my rifle, but intend to build another M4 for a red dot type scope and will put my CompM2 on it (no need for the newer ones IMHO) and will NOT trust my life to something that the battery might die on that fast. I may however mount it on a shotgun someday Like I said before, that extra price buys a hell of a lot of piece of mind if you think you may ever trust your life on it, if not, then it is really just kind of a dead issue.

That would be the worst choice since we have to pay sales tax here in Texas and all we get for the money is a dillo and a hat.  We need a Texas discount at Larue.
