I recently installed a Redi-Mag to my AR-15. It is a great accessory, it's well made and beats the heck out of taping mags together or using one of those velcro strap things.

My problem is that I want to use the Redi-Mag to store a magazine with a different type of ammo, and I don't necessarily want to reload from the Redi-Mag. The problem is that the Redi-mag releases both magazines when you active your rifle's magazine release, thus dumping both magazines.

Has anyone modified their Redi-Mags to operate independent of the rifle's magazine release? If so, I sure would like to know how you did it. I talked to Dave at Redi-mag and he said he did a couple of the modifications a long time ago for some Colt Machine guns. He said it was a rather complicated process.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I am not exactly sure what you are asking.  Do you mean something where you can quickly detach a magazine from the magazine clamp?  It could easily be designed.  I don't know that I see the point of it.  Just put the same ammo in both magazines.  Mag clamp systems are made so that you have just that you have less time reloading and more time shooting the bad guy.

Putting a different type of ammo in the magazines doesn't make sense to me.  Two mags are heavy, if you negate the original purpose, which is getting him before he gets you, what is the point of putting another pound of weight on you rifle?
