I've read through the reloading FAQ thread (unfortunately not the archived threads, but oh well) and have a few questions outstanding. The rifle I'm loading for is as follows: 16" medium contour Noveske barreled AR15, 1:10 twist, 6.8 SPC. 1. I've used a Stoney Point (now Hornady) OAL gauge for reloading 80gr Sierra Match Kings for High Power. I've contacted Hornady to see if they make the modified case (they don't - I'll have to send two fired cases + $11.00). Before I send off for it, I would like to know if anyone has loaded rounds longer than magazine length (single hand feeding) with say, the heavier, longer .277 bullets (135gr SMK, 130gr Nosler BT, 150gr Nosler BT, etc.) and if they had any luck with developing decent longer range loads with single loading these bigger bullets say .005-.015 off of the lands? 2. Any thoughts or success with subsonic loads using these heavier bullets? I'm not convinced (yet) to invest in a sound suppressor, but would like the option someday. 3. For now I'll be loading with some WCC844 I've got on hand, until I've got a chance to pick up some RL-10X and H322, as these two powders seem to have the most accuracy and velocity potential for 6.8 SPC. There seems to be a limited number of folks who've gone the H335 route with success, and even fewer with WCC844 (the military pulldown equivalent). Has anyone had any luck with WCC844 they care to share? Thanks, lansker |

I'm tagging this as I'm trying a couple of the same things. 1) I've done some testing with the 130gr SST's I've gotten them to within a hair of 2100fps. They are PRI magazine length (they will not fit in C-Products magazines). Over the weekend I loaded up some more test rounds and hope to get it to 2200fps at the least. If this doesn't work out I will be trying the non-magazine length recipie Hornady published and try for 2300-2350fps. 3) I've also got some WCC844. Over the weekend I loaded up a bunch of SSA cases (with Remington 9 1/2 primers) using Remmington 115gr FMJs. This is meant as an inexpensive practice load - not really an accuracy load. I'm hoping to make 2400fps (a duplicate of the Remington Factory load). I should be running them thourh a chrone next Saturday at the latest (providing it's not raining/snowing - Chrony won't work w/o some sunlight). |

Yeah, I don't expect accuracy with WCC844 either... Just wanted to see if it's at least being tried. Plus, who knows, someone finds a really good lot that just happens to work out better than average. My thought with the longer than mag length stuff was to see if a decent supersonic load could be used with the heavier bullets for say, long range targets and critters. Something about the 135gr SMKs in particular has got me curious in this type of loading. I did want to make sure there wasn't any pressure or other risk that I'm not thinking of since this would be a bit of a step up from what I've been doing with the 80gr SMK in .223. Oh the subsonic thing.... I wanted to know if a subsonic loading in 6.8 would be stabilized and if it would cycle the action. With .223 in an AR it's been said to be near impossible to use a subsonic load. Thanks for your answers and thoughts on the topic, Forest. |
| Ok I posted my Chrony Data on the 130gr loads and WCC844 here: 6,8 FAQ and Reloading Thread p33 |
