Hey guys!

I had a deal few months ago with some Remington 55gr UMC. This is probably the 4th box that I am using and did have some problem/jam 3 times already with it. I am wondering if it's the ammo (I really hope!!) or is it my new rifle that create that problem.

Picture to show up that the ammo when chambering, went back in the case and cause a failure. Is it the crimping that is not strong enough?

I did use some Federal, only two boxes and did not have that problem. This might be also my new rifle that is to hard when chambering the ammo.

Let me know if you guys already had that problem with Remington. I have read few post regarding that problem and it seems that it happend some time with the UMC.
Thanks

Is the bullet hitting the feed ramp?  Do you see the tell tale signs of marks on the bullet?

What happens when you take a round and try pushing the bullet into the case by hand (against a block of wood)?

yea there is a dent on the tip if these bullets. I guess there is something when the bullet tries to go on the feed ramp.

Is there anything to do?
Why did i not had this problem with the Federal?

That's the typical crappy Remington UMC ammo.  That kind of bullet pushback is very dangerous.

I have had this same problem its a bad run of ammo, I got mine from Kislers Firearms or now Orion Arms, it was police surplus ammo they were tring to sale form a police agency I belive.

When I first bought my AR years ago I purchaced a cheap 30 round magazine like an idiot and had that happen with my first go round. It wasn't pushing the front of the  bullets up out of the clip high enough. Threw it in the garbage and haven't had one since. I'm sure it was wolf I was using though.  Brought back bad memories seeing that again.

I've found several rounds of Rem. UMC 55gr. where the bullet was loose in the casing. A couple I found I could almost pull the bullet with my fingers. I always check my ammo before loading and I check UMC even more closely.

looks like the tip of the bullets hit something to me.

Eth01,

And, the bullet "push test?"  Since you said that this hasn't happened with another brand of ammo.

OK.....so, besides an ammo problem.

IF you suspect your rifle........check:

Magazines.......mark them and find out if it's a particular (possible) damaged one: spring, lips, follower riding smoothly, or follower tilt.

Sometimes there is a small feed ramp scratch on the bullet's ogive due to it striking the breech end of the barrel (or receiver - M4 feed ramp cuts?).  Though, it's usually not catastrophic, like what you have.

Well, i've checked 2 boxes in the lot...nothing wrong. Yea if i press/push hard the bullet it's going back a bit (few mm) enough to hide the canelure from the neck but not much.

yea there is a "dent" on the tip/ogive of the ammo (end of the top). Picture aren't good enough to show it up but yes there is. Now I am wondering if it's caused but the mag or anything else. This is stressing me for using any OTM bullet. Since it cause a "dent" with FMJ I am afraid what it can do on OTM and since cause more than just a malfunction...
Like i have mentioned, the Federal did not cause any problem...

Thanks !

Well, sounds to me that the bullet is crimped, "enough."

So.........it may just be, the bullet is taking a "nose dive" into the receiver or barrel feed ramp.

I have personally shot ~400 rounds of Remington UMC from my Armalite M15A4 and haven't had a single problem with it. No jams, no duds, nothing. It seems pretty reliable to me. I have noticed some accuracy issues, but for the price, can't complain too much.

My brother uses the same ammunition in his FS2000 and it worked just as well.
I plan on buying much more of it. Wal-Mart carries it for pretty cheap.

Remington UMC is cheaply made stuff.  I would rather shoot Ultramax.

This cant be an ammo issue. Those bullets are hitting something vertical for the tip to dent and slide back like that. I think he is putting the cartridge in backwards. j/k

I've fired several hundred rounds of UMC in my AR without issue.  Good brass....reloading it now :)

I had 2 rounds out of about 600 that came out of the box that way, Found 2 more that when pushed against the plastic box container also went completely down into the case.  After loading the ammo up I found about 17 rounds which I was not comfortable shooting as there was just too much movement of the bullet.  I boxed up the 17 rounds and empty boxes, opened a support ticket on remingtons website and shipped them back to them.  I got a letter in the mail as well as 10 boxes of ammo saying they had a QC issue on the line which has now been resolved.  After the Walmart price hike there is no way I would pay $8.43 a box.  $6.43 was an okay price, but for that much there is much better ammo out there.
