Removing CAR Stock > Slings and Other Accessories

I destroyed a cheap $5 CAR wrench trying to remove the nut on my Bushy to install a VLTOR stock. Any suggestions? I noticed Bravo Company had one for $30 if you think that would help.

I picked up the USMC tool today for 37.00. There are a lot of versions that have everything BUT the spanner for the stock, and the USMC tool is heavy duty, not flimsy like the little 5.00 spanner.

Aren't Bushmaster CAR stock lock nuts staked at the factory?

I hope not. Never heard that before. Heard about lock-tite being used, but no staking.

I don't know if Bushmaster is staked, but I removed a staked castle nut recently. To my surprise, it came off without a hitch. Just had to pull a little harder at first!

If they do use loctite, I believe you can gently heat it up and it will loosen. It does depend on which type of loctite they used, but it is worth a try.

ETA: Your actual question....

Yes. One of the better AR tools will get the job done. It's worth the investment. Or.... check your hometown forum. You could likely borrow one from another member if it is a one-time deal for you.

Place a wet washcloth over the castle nut and heat it up with an iron. It should work even for Red Loctite.

Probably a little late, but I just used a nail punch and a hammer on one of the lugs, and the nut came loose very easily. Place a couple layers of fabric between the punch and the nut and it will not mar the finish.
