I am getting the parts together for my first upper build, and I am looking at barrels with the A2 front sights as an option. I am 50% when it comes to removing these things. The first AR I had was tricky, and the second one I had to cut off with a Dremel tool and replace with a YHM bolt-on.
I used a 2x4 with a hole cut into it as my base for removing the pins. I actually broke a couple of pin punches on the second FSB. Are the orange FSB holders from Brownells(maybe its Midway) worth the money or are these best removed by someone with some kind of pin removing tool? |

The pins are tapered and only come out one direction.
The plastic blocks are helpful but wood works fine as long as you're punching them out the correct direction. The only tricky part of using wood is holding the pins 90* to your work surface so you can strike the punches straight in, since any kind of angle can bend the punch before the pin budges. There's some other options such as clamp-on A2 FSB's you could go with if you don't want to mess with taper pins. |

Grab you one of these and you'll always be pushing the tapered pins in the right direction. It does a great job securing the fsb and barrel. You'll want to use another bench block under the upper if it's attached to the barrel. Just my .02. |

That is the FSB holding block that I was considering. I know they only come out in one direction. Actually, the FSB that I had to cut off I did get one pin out but the other just would not budge.
I'm thinking that orange block will be what I need to hold the FSB level??? |

I also work on a heavy slab steel table or concrete if I am not a work. On a tight set of pins any give in the support cushions the hammer blow just enough to make a tough job that much tougher. The floor works well too, the flex or cushion of a soft table is a deal breaker. "Solid as a Rock" A little heat can help too. |

Like these guys said, my work bench was cushioning the blow from my hammer too much. -bob Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |
