I have not had a broken case but just wonder how easy it is to remove one.

it's pretty easy if you have a broken shell extractor

Just how does the broken shell extractor work? I notice at the small end of one I looked at it screws in to the larger section. Maybe someone could explain this for this reader of the forum.

If the BCG is jammed forward, you need to pull back on the CH while butt-stroking the deck... hard to dislodge it.  Then, insert the shell extractor into the chamber behind the stuck case and let the BCG slam forward on it.  Then, pull back the CH again.  The extractor will grab the rim of the shell extractor, which will now be lodged into the stuck case, and extract them both.
