If I take the foreward take down pin out is that little detent that appears to rest against it gonna shoot off into oblivion?

It shouldn't.  The way the foreward pin is designed you shouldn't be able to remove it completely from the lower without a tool to depress the detent or breaking it.

I'm not sure exactly what you are asking but here is my two cents worth. If you are talking about seperating the upper from the lower, the pivot pin and the takedown pin are captive (retained by the respective detents) and when you seperate the upper from the lower by pushing the pins outward until stopped by teh detent, both pins will bemain captive to the lower.

You may remove each pin completly if you wish. The takedown (rear) pin is easily removed and replaced but I would not remove the pivot (front) pin unless there is some specific purpose. The detent which retains the pivot pin is easy to loose control of and when it escapses it is often lost. I would strongly recomend safety glasses when removing or installing the pivot pin spring and detent.

If you must remove the front pivot pin detent and spring, do it after placing the lower inside a large plastic zip lock bag. That way if the detent flies out, it still stays inside the bag. A friend of mine taught me that and it works.
