well, i got my A1 upper from Ohio Ord. today, its black... thats ok, but i want it grey... im thinking about getting it reparked.. i noticed though, the barrel and front sight block arent black, but a dark greyish. not as light of a grey as i have seen some uppers though. But they are def. not black,as my upper is. so heres the question, if i get my upper reparked grey, should i repark the front sight bock and barrel also or leave them the darker grey and just get the receiver reparked. So i guess, im asking, is the barrel and front sight supposed to be a darker grey? (barrel is stamped C MP chrome bore) if this is the case, is there any spray on finish i can apply just to the receiver.? (without sandblasting) Thanks for all the help you have given me to get me this far! Ethan. |

Yes leave the barrel assy. the dark grey. They are steel and parkerized. Your upper is aluminum and is anodized, not parked. Only steel parts are parkerized. I'd leave the barrel as described and send your upper to U.S. Anodizing and get it re-anodized to the gray of your liking. Or someone may come along and tell you your options for spraying like Duracoat, Brownell,s or Norell's if you want to DIY. Hal |

Aluminum parts can't be parkerized, and steel parts can't be anodized. So if you send a full rifle, they would anodize the aluminum parts, and parkerize the steel parts. They also have their Xtremcoat service, and I believe this can be done on both, but isn't retro. |

If you send a complete rifle to US Anodizing, do they anodize everything, including the steel parts? Or do they parkerize the steel parts and anodize the aluminum parts? As stated above anodizing is a process applied only to aluminum parts, not steel parts. Parkerizing (also called Manganese or zinc phosphating) is only applied to steel, not aluminum parts. |

The refinish might be a spray-on - you could try a can of paint remover http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61Vti4-nDLL._SL500_AA280_.gif and a toothbrush to try and get the black off. If it comes off it may be grey and not need to be reanodized, if not, you're going to get it refinished anyway... If the upper reciever is indeed black, it is almost certainly a paint job over the original anodising. So before you go spending any money to reanodize the upper, I would definitely strip the paint first. Now the upper may have been painted because the finish was worn, but the unit I got awhile back had 99% of the original anodizing when I stripped the paint. The only wear was at the edges of the carry handle. |
