To get an old barrel nut off...and to install a new barrel nut, do you have to take the FSB off? How do you get the barrel nut on and off....to replace it?

The used upper I bought has a scratched up barrel nut, right where the end of the barrel nut meets the upper receiver. The scratches are all around the barrel nut.

Thank you.

Probably not a good idea to change it out over some cosmetic scratches.  As long as the gun functions and the barrel nut is not structurally damaged, you should leave it alone.

+1  It's under the handguards anyway, so you'll never see it.

You do mean the barrel nut and not the delta ring, correct?  Because you normally won't even see the barrel nut.

Even if it is the delta ring, you are likely to do a lot mre cosmetic damage to the gun trying to replace it than just leaving it.  Your front sight base WILL get banged up a bit.

If you send the barrel to Bushmaster and have them do it the FSB will look just as good as before you sent it to them. Also, have them install some new taper pins too because Bushmaster will reuse the old pins if you don't order new ones.

I used Birchwood Casey Aluminum Black (rubbed it on w/a Q-tip) on the scratched delta ring when I bought my used CAR upper, and it worked great.  You can't even see where the scratch was anymore.
