So, here I am with four really nice old Colt 20-round magazines with the original followers and rusty springs.  Got one apart and cleaned up, now I'm realizing that I'm not smart enough to figure out how to get the follower inserted into the base of the magazine.  I'm using a new green follower and can't get past the little flat spring that holds the floor plate in place?  Everything I've found online shows a guy rebuilding a 30 round magazine.

It isn't going to work with a green follower....

Even if you could fit it in, your capacity will be limited.

Why do so many people want to put special followers in their 20 round magazines? It works without one, right? That is because it is not made to work with anything else but the 20 round alloy or black plastic followers. Even black plastic 30 round followers won't do it.

Don't know if they worked before... I just bought them today and never shot one before.  I guess I'll just replace the spring and be good to go.  I was going to replace the follower because everybody I've talked to says if you're going to replace the spring, replace the follower at the same time... guess they were talking about 30 round mags.

People take followers and springs too seriously...

If they work, there is no reason to change anything. Let the spring be a little rusty, as long as it forces cartridges up fast enough for the bolt to grab them, it is good to go. The follower doesn't really wear out... no need to ever replace one, unless a magazine (a 30 rounder) causes you a problem, you could try a new follower.

I have never changed a USGI spring or follower... they have all worked when I received them, I don't know how to fix something if it isn't broken.

Keep the original followers.

Brownells has replacement springs if you want to change them.
