I was thinking of buying a night sight front sight post for my AR and was wondering if I could just screw the old front sight post out and screw in the new one or if there are other things, like the detent, ect that needed to be replaced.  Never had a front sight apart before.

I tried searching but came up empty.  Thanks in advance.

You got it. Just unscrew the existing FSP & screw in the new one. Be careful not to lose the detent & detent spring.

Yep... This is not difficult at all. My friend and I swapped out his front sight at the range on the tailgate of the truck.

Will the detent and spring come out as well?  Will I need another one?  If they do come out, how do I re-install them?

The detent and spring are held by the sight post base. They don't fly out but be careful not to drop them. It's easy, and helps if you have the front sight tool. You can do it with small pointed tools too, or a bullet nose.

They will come out if you take them out or turn the upper upside down. You can re-use the detent & spring.

This has aroused my curiosity.    What type of front sights are available, and where would I look for one?

This is the one I ordered yesterday.  It was the best price I could find with shipping.  A lot of places wanted 60+ shipping for it.  Brownells sells mnay front sight posts.  They even have an assortment pack with several ones available for whatever your shooting needs.
