Here is a replica of my 604 I used while I was in the Air Force. The upper and barrel are Colt and came with the exception of the handguards and BCG came complete. The front swivel even still had that white protective stuff on it! The lower is NDS. The complete stock set came from some guy of Gunbroker for $25. FCG and springs are DPMS with naval jelly treatment. The b/c is an old chrome notched one. And yeah, I know wthe buffer tube should be gray, but the black one will work for my purposes.

That's a fine looking rifle! Congrats and welcome to our insanity...er...board.
Don't get too hung up on the black receiver extension. My 604 kit came with a black extension. It also has a different sized wrench flats than the standard size that has been used since...um..forever. I don't recall the sizes offhand but I did a photo essay and FALARAK saved it in his tacked thread in the "Build It Yourself" forum. |

Another 604 joins the ranks, nice. I also went with a black (blued?) buffer tube for my 604, based on this photo from FALARAK's "Build it Yourself" thread: ![]() Top extension is from the Model 604. Middle is the M16A1 and the bottom is the M16A2. All the same length. http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=4&t=226782 |

Thanks, it saved me the trouble of looking for a gray buffer tube. |

Yup, my 604 clone is the earlier one with the chrome bolt carrier, 3-prong flash suppressor and partial fence NDS lower. http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q236/USMCGruntUSAFCATM/Firearms/Rifles/DCP_1979.jpg <scurries off to safe to be sure my rifle is still there> I probably shoot this rifle more than the 603 I built. But not as much as the lightweight XM177-style clone I built. I LOVE that little carbine! I have another later 604 upper built using the birdcage suppressor and parked smooth bolt carrier that is waiting on funds to free up for another NDS A1 lower and LPK. The other thing this next 604 is going to sport is a Colt 3X20 scope if I can ever find one for a good price. Years ago I had one of the Chinese copies and while I liked the idea of the old style scopes, I didn't see enough improvement in my shooting with that cheap scope to keep it so I got rid of it. Now I am thinking I want to try that same style scope again but this time with a proper scope rather than cheap Chinese junk. I always thought those scopes looked cool. Until I mounted one on the SP1 I was buying brand new in 1979. It was like looking thru a soda straw. In the intervening years I've picked them up and yep, still like looking thru a soda straw. But they were $99 brand new back then. Just never have liked them. |
