I bought a RRA from a friend of my brothers in 07. BDR set in pretty bad within about 4mo. I sold off the HBAR CAR upper that came with it and bought a HBAR middy because that was all that was in stock right before the 08 elections. It shot just fine, but was heavy compared to the Stag M4gery I had just bought.
The next year (09) I sent it out and had the barrel recontoured to a hair thicker than Govt profile, but not pencil and had it cut to 14.5" and a phantom welded on. I left the FSB on ran it like this for about 6months before Samson came out with their EVO model. I then bought a 12.37" EVO and chopped and shaved the FSB and installed the handguard on it. Threw on some MI sights (HK style front and ERS rear). Threw on a SPOT red dot, and MIAD, and CTR and called it done.
When I bought the EVO I also bought the tools required to remove the delta ring assembly. I wanted the tools and I thought it would be a waste to cut the delta ring up so that was my justification. At that point I went on a building spree and bought parts with 1/7 and 1/8 twist and used more "mil spec" parts in my builds. The RRA sat in the safe collecting dust. That changed when I bought a CMMG .22lr conversion kit. The 1/9 twist of the RRA and Stag made them the go to rifles with that kit.
Earlier this year my youngest son (8yrs old) expressed an interest in going to the range. We took the RRA out but it was a tad too heavy for him to work. Recently I went ahead and lightened it up a little more and he really enjoys shooting it now. I replaced the MI sights with some MBUS sights I had in the parts bin. Removed the light on it. I had previously put the RRA lower on a different build so this lower sports a CAR stock and the skinny back strap on the miad.
It did not make it super light, but it did lighten it up where he can manage it much easier. I have him using it benched now shooting from a bag, but I will probably try to get him squaring up to the target and shooting without the bag next time.
