Thanks John! Degreasing won't be a prob just wanted to make sure I used the right product. The stuff will work good for your application. It is as thin as water. It doesn't affect your anodized coating, and it really doesn't turn the bare aluminum areas "jet black"... it's more of a dark gray, so I think it's just what you need. Too bad, with shipping, it can be pretty pricey for one or two jobs. John Thomas |

Yes as far as I can tell it belonged to the North Anna Tactical Unit here in VA until they traded them in for M4s a while back. Whoever got it after that gave it a pretty rough time, bore is still in good condition as are most of the internals but it looked like it was locked in a barn and left there for a long time. Other side: http://imageshack.us/a/img855/2875/q8nr.jpg p.s. as far as the aluminum black goes I can't find anyone in Richmond that stocks it so i'll just order some from their website. It just goes to show we have all these gun/gun smith stores in Richmond but most of them are content to sell off the rack guns and outdoor clothing and just send their stuff away to real gun smiths when people bring it in. p.p.s. it's been given a good cleaning and I spent some time on the range with it a few weeks back and it still works flawlessly. The round handguards are burning my eyes! (Actually a very nice weapon.) |
| Nice piece, my wifes family lives just around the corner from the power station on Lake Anna. I've got a good fishing spot near the hot water dumps. From there I can see some of the security patrols and as stated they have changed to M4s w/optics. I can't imagine plant security being too rough on their weapons. |

Yeah I don't think the guys at north Anna were I just think whoever had it in the intervening years probably shlt it once then left it lying around to gather dust and cobwebs. I love walking around the lake myself. Never been up to the plant area though. |
| You can get pretty close in a boat. Her parents live in a big ass lake house in a cove about a mile and a half from the facility, we're both from Fredericksburg. One day I even had two of the security guards ask me if I caught anything good. I guess having that rifle is like having one of the old riot shotguns from the Oakridge facility during WWII/Cold War era. Id be happy to have it. Have you had a chance to play with it yet? I think Greentop has that alumablack, give them a call. If not you could try the Bass Pro in Ashland. |

Green top moved Into the old gander mountain facility off 95 and in doing so lost any local friendliness or charm they had. It's basically a dicks now which is a shame. I agree with you about owning it though I like the fact the rifle has history which is why I wanted to restore it but not overhaul it. I've taken her out on the range and she works flawlessly, good groups at 100 yards. Haven't tried it out further. Next time you're in the area drop me a line and you can try her out.
Ps. Called up to green top I asked the guy on the phone if they had it but he didnt know. It isn't on their website but I will swing by this week and check it out. Thanks. |

Thank you sir, will do. We're gonna be up at the lake house in Oct. Sucks to hear about Greentop, it was a great place when it was on the highway. I've been down here for 5 years, last time I was up there was 2 years ago. Its changed a bit. Where are you located and where do you shoot at? I may have been there before.
ETA: Sorry man, didn't mean to jack your thread. What markings does it have that indicate the N. Anna facility? May I have a photo sir? What date is the upper? Lower? Im still learning my retro AR gear, thanks for the help. |

Im still learning my retro AR gear, thanks for the help. Not jacking up my thread at all. Well as of right now there is only one place to shoot rifles in the Richmond area and that is Colonial Shooting Range. I actually tried to buy land and get a permit to put a range up on the Chesterfield/Powhatan line but neither county would rezone the land and no one wanted a gun range near them (despite the fact the land i picked is two miles from the nearest residence). Anyway long story short i usually just shoot at a buddies house for now. For short range stuff i use dominion shooting range in midlothian. The staff are friendly, the range is a little run down but is a good place. The problem with my current set up is i'm limited to about 100 yards max. I really want to do some long distance shooting but there is nothing around even Colonial only goes up to 100. Greentop isn't bad it just isn't what it used to be. As far as the AR goes i'm speculating that it came from North Anna however the store at which i bought it from is the one at which North Anna firearms go to be traded in and sold (was the same story with their mini 14's years ago). I have a friend that worked there, one who worked at north anna and another who is now in local LEO who confirmed to me that the rifle is the type they used and had correct type markings...it's not a roll mark its a simply scratch into the surface and matching furniture. Again it's not much to go but it's the best I have for now. I've reached out to colt on the serial number also to see what that turns up. |
