At one place I worked in Afghanistan we had a pair of Army 105s. Those guys were good to go. We were frequently engaged from across the Pakistani border, and the OIC chose to follow the "fire in self defense" instead of "seek permission before firing into Pakistan" SOP. I think those guys got off something like ten rounds per gun per minute, and they used them like great big sniper rifles. It was great to have them on our side. |

The 105mm is a really nice piece of machinery. As some of you guys know, at one time during my career, I was a gunner on the AC-130H, which employed the 105mm (from the air). And I can agree with jtb0311, the thing is like an enormous sniper rifle. From 10,000+ ft altitude, it could hit exactly where aimed... every shot.

John Thomas The guy at my LGS was a gunner on an AC-130 also. He claims he took out two Iraqi tanks with one HE round as that's all they had left to use. He says the hit exploded the first tank which caught the second tank on fire. He also said one of the tanks was a command tank. |

John Thomas Real Gunships were AC130A's with four GE M61A1 20mm, four Mini Guns, blunt Roman nose and three blades props. Showing my age as the Phase Inspection Branch at Naha Okinawa did the Phase Inspections on them in 68 and I was the OIC with Smsgt Jesse James as my NCOIC. |

Did anybody notice the 40mm launcher at 6:10? It looked like an M79 but had a three round sliding breech. I was in ROTC in the early '70s and don't remember ever covering anything like that. Does anyone know anything about this? Google: T148E1 Thanks! |
