So I picked this up and am afraid to ask what everyone thinks as I am pretty sure that some of the parts have been replaced. I know the bolt has. Not sure about some of the rest and I will let the group decide. I have an idea which ones have been pilfered but will wait to see what is said. It SP1  SN 2688 and the finish looks thin and a little off. I really think it just need to be cleaned really well. If what I have found on line is correct it should have been manufactured in "65". I paid a bunch so please be gentle. I do appreciate the input and if any additional pics are needed please let me know.

Looks like it needs a good stripping and cleaning.  Nice 4 digit!

Very nice.  Not the correct charging handle, though.

Just needs a chrome bolt and your gtg!i machined to carriers to that spec while back.

Is the handle black?or current?

Only the bolt and charging handle seem replaced.  If you want to restore the hardcoat anodizing, clean it with Acetone and a soft bristle nylon brush.  You will be amazed what it looks like when you get that old cosmoline out of the pores!  Great piece!  The bolt carrier is original.  It is "transitional" when they started milling the SP1 carriers.  Should not have a C on the carrier.

And I have cleaned it some but was in a rush to get pics due to weather. I will finish it this weekend.

Anyone know where to get a Chrome bolt?

It is a roll pin. Is it supposed to be a rivet or was that later?

Carrier does not have a C that I could find.

Man that thing is sweet and old! In 65 the bolt carriers did not have a "C" stamped on them and the staking was minimal IIRC. I had an old one like that at one point. It would be nice to find the correct bolt and charging handle and you'd be in good shape. Love the dingy patina on the receivers. Congrats on your new acquisition.

As the others have said charging handle & lack of chrome bolt. Everything else is right.

FWIW I have SP02685, only 3 rifles apart on the assemble line!

HK45shooter , Nice rifle. They both probably came of the line with in a few minutes of each other. Would be possible to get a pic of the bolt?

I just cleaned a rifle of patina a couple of weeks ago. I tried solvents and got nowhere. Purple Power and hot water turned it to like new. I did the furniture also. You can't imagine the dirt running off it.

Yours looks like a good shooter, in great condition. I sometimes wish mine was. It is a safe queen with very little wear where it counts, like it has just been hand cycled.

Here ya go!

NEVER use solvents to try and clean a collectable.

Honestly all you did was remove the rifles history. Removing rust/corrosion is one thing, but you should NEVER remove patina.

Hopefully you didn't get too aggressive with it.

That is correct!  NEVER remove anything that would give a collector an excuse to knock your rifle down in value!  Seriously, collectors can be a funny, hypocritical, bunch (there are good guys, not to group everyone together).

I personally enjoy original patina, but a rifle that looks like it rolled off the assembly line is sexy as well.  It is YOUR rifle.  Shoot it, and enjoy it.  She is a beauty and value is far outside of my means.  Cheers!

So you're saying that it's his rifle, but telling him what NOT to do with his rifle? Who cares what a "collector" thinks?

Very good looking rifle, OP. The early SP1's are the only ones that I'd be interested in owning, and I too would want to clean it up the best I could.

I appreciate everyone's advice, guidance and help.. My plan as of now is to gently clean it up to get the excess oil and grease off. Other then that I have no plans to do anything else to it.  I usually use either Balistol or Hoppes to clean with. Anyone see any issues with this or denatured alcohol? I have sourced a correct bolt with the assistance of a member here. I also want to thank everyone who offered the correct parts. This is what makes this forum and others great.

I use watered down Simple Green to clean oil off parts. Then rinse in hot water and re apply a light coating of oil. No harm to any of the part finishes and cheap.

BTW... Beautiful rifle!

So she is complete again. the bolt arrived yesterday and I was able to swap it tonight. I had the charging handle the next day. I have not done anything else at all to the rifle and am probably going to leave it as is. I appreciate everyone help and parts offers.

Thanks
