Not sure where this belongs, but since it all is the the same time peiroid as my M16A1 clone I figured it might be fun here. The back story is as a kid (late 70's) I learned to hunt deer with a group of men that were either ex-military or active duty national guard. They went into the woods like they were going into battle. It sounds funny today, but back then it was very common. I got left overs and extras from all the guys for my set up. Over the years, I stopped hunting and the gear got spread out all over the place. After I started building my clone, I started digging throught boxes of my Father's and my own. These pictures are what I came up with. The grenades were blue practice units from his Philly bomb squad days, that I painted years ago.

All that stuff reminds me of when I was a kid in the middle to late 1960's. My best friend's father was a "lifer" in the Army. He was stationed at Ft Knox, about 25 miles from home, and he brought more stuff home than you could imagine. Could have outfitted every neighborhood kid. We had sleeping bags, tents, canteens, alice packs, belts, mag pouches..........you name it.......if the Army had it we had it. And I don;t remember where any of it went. IF I HAD ONLY KNOWN THEN WHAT I KNOW NOW!!!!

Sounds like my youth. We eat K rations in our tree fort. Mummy sleeping bags, tents, coats, gloves, all kinds of gear, it was great. I'm not sure I have found the last of the stash yet.

That's a great collection. I like the fanny pack. I got a 50's gas mask bag instead. It is older then the rest, so I left it out of the pictures. I wish I had the .45 mag pouch. I have a black leather .45 twin mag pouch, but there are no marking on it that I can remember. It is also a belt loop, not Alice clip, so I'm not sure it is military. I never did get a helmet from any of them (I would have loved that!), just bits and pieces that a 12 year old boy could wear or use hunting.

This is all I have left, and I'm saving for my son to play army one day.
I used to have a ton of it.  I think it's all  80s vintage?

Love the mask! What boy would not love to play with that? Every kid in the neighborhood will want one.

He runs around in now.

you guys letting your kids play with that stuff should be careful. Isn't there some kind of federal law now that you can't let kids play army............something about it produces violent antisocial behavior.

Ok, now I'm going to have to admit that I'm now looking at helmet and liners on eBay. I have no clue what I would do with it though. My kids are grown! Maybe the thought of someday grandkid? LOL...

It appears you are missing a .45 pistol!

Study up on lids before you buy any helmets on fleaPay.

VN stuff is VERY different from mid 70's to 80's pots.

If it's too good to be true.......Caveat Emptor.

Here is an old Marine Corps picture that has been around a long time. This one hung in my parents bedroom for years.

A few years ago, I decided to take my own picture with my stuff to replicate the original.

The helmet cover is a repro, but the M1 helmet is an original 1942 USGI issue (fixed bale). The M1 Garand is my 1943 Springfield Armory (s/n: 1,768,XXX). The web sling is an original 1943.

The helmet is actually an M1 fixed bale model.

Nice early M1 with the raised bar buckle! Hows the paint?

I love Plain Jane M1's. So many fakers and humpers out there there selling Dick WInter's personal M2 with 101 abn insignia painted on post war crap it's hard to find a decent plain M1 pot.

VERY nice rig and thanks for sharing.

The paint is in pretty good condition. The helmet and liner had been in storage in a man's attic in Central Georgia for years. I even got a WWII Marine Corps Alpha Dress uniform (w/ Rambling Duck patch and ribbons still on it) from the same person. The uniform looks like it was worn once and put away. I paid $40 for the uniform. I think I paid $75 for the helmet and liner.

I have a 1970 Colt series 70 colt commander that was my Dad's daily off duty carry for 35 years till he died. It is satin finished and does not fit the military theme of the picture.

I'd be looking for an 1980 helmet, but have no clue where to even start on making sure it was correct.

Jr.

GREAT price on the helmet! (Unless it was 30 years ago)

You KNOW a lid that early should have a hawley liner right? RIGHT?

Pricey AND rare like an original 601 barreled receiver! Good luck with that!

A 1980's helmet should be cheap and plentiful.

Do some research HERE and other military collectors websites and learn what to look for.

Should be easy enough. ALl you have to do is steer clear of foreign copies.

I have an 80's  steel pot and liner that I bought from Sportsman Guide a few years ago. The only issue is that the helmet cover is for the Kevlar helmet. Now I need to get a Kevlar helmet and liner and a 80's camo helmet cover.

It's kind of like asking a little boy why he picks up pebbles or bottle caps and puts them in his pocket... Because they caught his eye and they were cool. So he picks them up and looks at them with marvel in his eyes. Big boys have big toys...

HookMech, I spent 25yrs in the Navy. 1st 10 as an Avionics Tech, last 15 in a Contruction Battalion.  MANY GOOD times and memories,,,,(some not so great). A better question would have been about the CHIP DETECTOR/HOIST panel in the pic.  But,,, its way to long of a story for my old beat up hands to type it out. I kept these things as little reminders of some of the GOOD times.

I'm in!

Still in need of boots (boondockers), but this is 100% authentic WWII USMC circa 1945. The dog tags are named to a young man who was part of a heavy machine gun squad on Iwo Jima (4th Marine Division). The shelter half also has a wool blanket and the tent pegs and "guy line", as well as a poncho....I'm a little obsessive, I guess.

ETA: The paracord is for an idea I had about anchoring the pack to a hook in the ceiling, because, if you haven't noticed already, the whole setup is back heavy and likes to make the belt ride up in the front. It's still a work in progress!
