Heres the deal:

I'm planning on using the same scope (a Leupold 3-9x33 Ultralight or possibly a Mark4 MR/T) on my Steyr Scout and future Stag Model2 (flat top). Right now I have a set of QRW rings for my scout which is detechable without using tools. I would like to keep this feature so I can move the scope between the two rifles on a go.

The QRW rings is medium height, 0.88", so if I were to use these, I would need some kind of riser rail on the AR to get the proper height? Too high rings would make the mount impractical on the Scout. Any recomendations?

I like an extended/scout rail for this kind of use, as it lets you mount further forward for eye relief. and if your other gun's rails use Picatinny spec spacing, it's quick to swap scopes around.  There are quite a few rails, and what you get depends on what you need.

Some (like the RRA scout rail) won't let you mount a BUIS, others leave room for one, and the ARMS 38ex or sex have a built-in ARMS 40 BUIS.  Some attach with thumbscrews that protrude quite a bit, but are relatively quick to remove, while others have standard hex screws for a lower profile that requires a tool.  Some have recoil lugs built in, and others use the cross-slot screws as recoil lugs.  Some slide on from the front or rear, and others go on from the top with a side rail that clamps them in place.  Most are 1/2", but some are shorter.

Look around at what's out there and what features they have, and you'll find something that works for you.

99% of the riser rails on the market are 0.5" tall.  The only exception that I know of is the KAC riser rail which is 0.75" tall.

Pick your favorite scout rail and be done with it.

I would suggest the RRA Scout Rail . . . a good price and plenty of room for mounting any scope size.

Here's my setup with Burris XTR low rings;

Thanks for the tips.

Larue has a .625" riser rail:

With my QRW rings that would give me a total height of 1.505", do you guys think that would be suitable? A 0.5 riser would give a total height of 1.38", would that be a bit too low?

Go with the LaRue.  That is what I did.

1.38 may be a tad low.  My setup comes out to 1.4 which works well for me on my Carbine.

1.5 is about perfect.

I like the LaRue riser also, Its quick detach and it gives you plenty of room to put a flip up sight behind it, and you can remove your scope anytime without losing your zero to put some other optic on it.

I have three different optics that I use on one AR.  An Eotech, 10x scope, and a 1-4x scope, each mounted on LaRue mounts.  They are a little spendy, but its alot cheaper than buying a seperate AR for each optic.  LaRue is the only game in town for versatility.
