I bought a pin punch set for my AR from brownell, and they have points like a transfer punch on the bottom. Should they be flat on the bottom or is this pretty common?

Ps, excuse my noobness

Hehehe.....
A flat bottom would be a simple drift punch.

The nub identifies it as a roll pin punch.
The nub helps you keep the punch on the pin as you strike.

They are there to keep the punch centered on the roll pin, and to keep the pin end from collapsing.

Ok, so I bought them to remove my FSB. Should I buy a drift punch set to remove the tapper pins, or could I skate by with these to knock them out?

I would look for this:

http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=26485/sku=827-530-320/Product/Taper-Pin-Starter

Taper pin starter.  The tip is slightly concave. Or use a drift punch.

These are handy too.  I have one on backorder.

You'll ruin them trying to knock out roll pins.

Hit up Lowe's or Home Depot for a standard pin punch. Save the roll pin punches for just that, roll pins.

I wouldn't use them on taper pins. The RP punches are for more of a delicate operation.
The taper pins require a stout flat point punch, a good block, a decent hammer and some authority.
I'm a carp, so I'd be swinging something big. You don't want to "ride" it with a toy hammer or you might start deforming and rivetizing the pins.

When you "ride" a nail or pin it means hitting it with a multitude of weak strikes when only a few strong strikes are what's needed.

Roll pin punches will install or remove roll pins.

Use a drift for straight or tapered.  For pressed pins the shorter the better.  A nail set will work fine

A nail set is a very good type of punch to use to get the taper pin moving. Medium size.
Some will hit it with penetrating oil (Kroil) prior to driving out the pins.
Once it's moved you can switch to a straight drift.
Use a good FSB block (like Brownell's or similar) and a very solid base (read concrete floor) so your strikes won't be absorbed.

BCM's advice is worth reading.
