To all,

Yeah, I seem to be the king of the Noob questions, but here I go again.

Like a lot of us out here, I've got to use preban mags...which is cool. I've got around 50 of them now. Some are still "in the plastic" and some have seen their share of wear and tear.
All of the unwrapped ones have new springs and followers.

Here's the big Q...

Do you guys use certain mags till the boxes (feed lips) are trashed before you move on to other mags in your collection? Do you rotate through them all evenly to spread out the wear?

For a guy like me who's living behind the lines, my mags have to last for the lifetime of my AR or for my entire lifetime. That's why I'd like to know if anyone does anything to make their mag bodies last.

I'll bet he is...and so was I...is that such a hard question?  Plenty of folks reading his thread and my earlier one but nobody seems to understand the question or is too damned bashful to make a simple post or doesn't have the common courtesy to share your practices.  All many want to do is post BS comments like that one!

Kinda, I have a lot of preban mags. But they are all used. I refinish them and then store them for later. I have 10 range mags that see all the use. If I step on, break, lose, or destroy a range mag then I pull another mag out of storage and put that into the rotation. Mags technically should outlive you. I just like to have a bunch because I often give many away to my friends that I shoot w/.

You don't need to worry about rotating them so they all see the same amount of wear. They're just mags, they can take a beating. I live in NY so I know what your talking about.

What I would do if I were in your situation is pick out ~ 10 of them and use at the range and only use those 10 at the range other than a couple range uses for the other 40 just to test them.  Then load 10 or 20 of the remaining mags and leave them loaded indefinitely for SHTF.  Then leave the other 20 or 30 squirreled away unloaded and unused other than testing in case one of your range mags goes tits up.

Better still, just use 10 round mags at the range, load half your thirtys up for SHTF, and take good care storing the others.

You will most likely not ever wear the feed lips out just using 10 of your mags over and over, and if you think you shoot enough to do so start using 10 round mags as you can.

My, hopefully helpful, $0.02.

I get it...what are you...about 16?

It's a serious question. People spend a lot of money on their ARs and accessories, and if I lived in a ban state, I too would want my stuff to last forever.

I would take one mag and make it your bitch. This way you can see for yourself just what they will take and keep on trucking.

You say you have 50 total. I would take 10 of those and use for practice. Out of the remaining 40, I'd split them in half and have 20 loaded in ammo cans with dessicant, and the other 20 kept in mint condition for later if something happens to your other mags.

I only have about 15 mags total, but what I've done is shot each mag 3 times with a full load to function-check it, then left about 10 of them loaded & stored for SHTF. The rest are my range mags. I put my own "QC mark" on each mag after I've done this. I have also numbered my mags so I can keep track of which ones are malfunctioning. (So far out of about 18 mags I've owned I've had 3 go TI for one reason or another.)

BE SURE that your mags function well in your gun BEFORE the SHTF!

And, Veracity, there are no dumb noob questions. Only dumb noob mistakes.
