I bought a box full of AR goodies from an old lever action collector at a gunshow this weekend. He new virtually nothing about this stuff.

Among these parts were a round full-length A2 style handguard set that will obviously work only with a round HG cap. They also differ from the A2 HG's that I'm familiar with in that they have only twelve ribs.

Can anyone identify them for me, possibly as to who made them and what rifle did they originally come on, if any?

TIA

Possibly sold by Choate, I remember seeing these in catalogs in the early 1980s, in a Duncan Long AR book, and recently on an old SP1.

These are aftermarket handguards made to copy the M16E2 that became the M16A2 handguards. They were  never issued or factory on any rifle.

FMO,

That's exactly what I'm wondering! Included with the box of goodies that I bought was a Colt "C MP CHROME BORE" stamped SP1 type barrel that has a round HG cap on it, and appears like the FSB (can't be absolutely sure) has never been removed.

I've "heard" that there were some HG's of this description that came on a few Sporters, possibly during the transition between the SP1, Sporter II and full A2 rifles, but have never seen one, nor do I believe everything that I hear [;)]. Your post has given me something more concrete to work with.

Would you mind sparing me a few details about your rifle? A1 or A2 barrel? A1 or A2 buttstock and grip? A1 or A2 upper? Fenced or smooth-side lower? I'm just trying to get a picture of it in my mind.

Even if my HG's turn out to be a set of aftermarket knock-offs I would still like to have a handle on id'ing them, plus I'm always interested in ANY Colt variation!

I appreciate the responses.

It is on a Match Target (lightweight) A2 upper, sporter lightweight barrel, a2 stock, fenced lower. If you want some pics PM your email address to me and I will forward them.

Just to clarify: The ones I am talking about that are DEFINITELY aftermarket only vaguely resemble the A2 handguards on stock Colts and the M16A2 rifle.  Among other things, the distance between "ribs" is increased - which is why they only have 12 and look "off"

OODA_Loop,

Those aftermarket HG's that you describe sound like the ones that I have. Thanks!

FMO,

IM on the way. I appreciate it!
