Just wondering if anyone here had any experience / opinions on running an Edgewater buffer in a retro build. We know they were problematic (too light?) and so they were replaced, I'm just wanting to hear personal experience here of how they 'feel' in comparison to a regular rifle buffer. Any difference to note in a semi? more jarring? I'm curious as to whether they feel different in operation.

I shot an actual 601 equipped with the original edgewater buffer, it shot flawless in both semi and auto. The main difference is on full auto, it spits out that 5.56 like no body's business! A lot faster than the later M-16A1s. I like it!

I haven't shot mine yet, but I plan to.  I've heard they lead to bolt bounce in full-auto, and that they are fine in semi.  I shot them in the service, but that was a long time ago, and I didn't give a shit then...

I have an Edgewater in my 602 clone, and it runs like a top. They are remarkably lighter than a modern buffer, and I was a little timid about actually using it in the rifle at the range, but even after about a hundred rounds or so,it was still functioning just fine.It does  seem to feel a little different though, with less mass slamming back and forth in the tube, because then I picked up my A1 and it felt a little less harsh, probably due to the heavier buffer absorbing some of the recoil .Mind you, we're talking about .223, so the recoil is negligible anyway, but I did feel a little difference in smoothness of cycling between the two.Still, the Edgewater ran just fine.

They were in usage for at least 8 years before the .gov upgraded to the current buffer.

Tell you what guys, I have a factory M16A1 and an Edgewater buffer. I need to make a trip to the range anyway so Monday I'll video a comparison. I have a few hundred rounds of factory Lake City M193 loaded with the standard ball powder so it will tell the true story.

Sweet!!! I look forward to the report.

Sorry guys I could not figure out how to post the videos.

Thanks for the responses guys - that's what I was looking for. I know the light Edgewater caused bolt bounce on FA, but wondered how it did on semi.

I was thinking of building a 605 clone and was wandering if an edgewater would help with the reliability issues I've heard about.  My thinking is the lighter buffer would help it cycle better.  Any thoughts, experience?

You could take an M16A1 buffer,  and remove the guts from it if you want to experiment with a lighter buffer.

As promised. Here are links to a couple of videos on You Tube. I test fired ten rounds with each buffer. Both performed flawlessly. It seems that the Edgewater buffer had a slightly higher cyclic rate but it was hardly noticeable. Testing was done with current production Lake City M193 55 grain ball ammunition.

Very cool 45Bravo! I watched both videos and you could tell the difference. Just hearing the riiiiiip of that FA fire put a grin on my face. Thanks for the video!

45Bravo, thanks for the comparison videos. They both sound great!

Does anyone know how much an Edgewater weighs?

on my scale i am getting 1.8 oz for the edgewater.
a new production rifle buffer comes in at 4.8 oz.

i would have thought there was more difference between the two. if you hold them in your hands its like a rock versus a feather.
