I have an AR whose maker recommends shooting SAAMI spec ammo for max potential.  What do I need to shoot?  Its chambered for .223-5.56. 1:9 twist.

If it says SAAMI spec then it means .223 Remington. There is no SAAMI specs for 5.56mm ammo.

So do you have a 5.56 or .223 cut chamber?

There's no real difference in the ammo, except for the higher pressure a 5.56 cut chamber can tolerate.

the barrel is stamped 5.56 1:9 twist but the receiver is stamped .223-5.56.

5.56 chamber then. The receiver won't tell you what chamber is cut in the barrel.

so what would you shoot 5.56 or .223?

Whatever you want. You might read the Ammo FAQ tacked at the top of the forum.

Either one would be safe to fire. 1 in 9" twist will generally shoot 50 to 69 grain bullets reasonably well. Some will handle the 75 and 77 grain bullets. Experimentation will show what it prefers.

You must be having a good day, Zhukov.  That was pretty mild.

jestridge, the FAQ and Ammo Oracle can teach you many things, and the difference between .223 Remington and 5.56mm NATO ammunition, chambers, and such are just a few of those things.
