So I have a DPMS LRT-SASS on order (who knows how long that will take to get here), and now I need some advice on scopes.  I know it's probably a better idea to go top dollar on the scope rather than the gun, but I definitely can't afford an $800 Leupold Mk IV right now.

From what I've been reading it seems like you can't really get under the $400-500 price range for a decent scope, so I was just wondering if anyone had suggestions for what brand/models would be good choices.  The more inexpensive the better :-)

I was thinking something like 3-9x40mm, mil-dot reticle if I could get one.

And does anyone have a clue what ring height I can get away with for a 40mm objective and still clear the rear mangonel sight?  Medium?  High?

I just put a Bushnell 4200 Elite on my DPMS SASS 308 and love it.  Variable 4x - 24x 50 mm objective.  Priced around $400.  Mounted it on a set of Barrett adjustable rings so I can get as much upper end MOA as I can. It clears the rear sight fine. Before, I had Millett rings (high) and it barely cleared it.

I have a Leupold Mark IV variable on my Barrett 50 and to be honest, I can't tell that much difference as far as optics quality goes. Over twice the price of the Bushnell.

Well that is somewhat comforting.  Does it hold zero with those adjustable rings?

So if I'm only getting one with a 40mm objective do you guys think I still would need high rings?

I didn't ask this earlier, but what are good brands of rings?  I see Burris a lot.  Any reason why Leupold rings are worth over $120?

Millett scopes are not too expensive and are decent quality.  You also get a 30mm main tube vs the 1" tube most others offer in the same price range (for tactical style scopes)...

I cleared out the bank to make room for the mark 4. And in a few months I will be doing it again.

I've got a Millett TRS-1, it's a 50mm scope (still works with normal rings, and the mounts typically used in an AR-10/15).  Not a bad optic at all for under $300.

Burris XTR rings (30mm) with that, and you've got a pretty effective bargain setup, while you save for a Leupold (that's precisely what I did, still have the Millet, but just spent the money on the Leupy)

With 40 mm, you should be able to use medium height rings but why take a chance.  Just go for a pair of high Millets. 20 bucks. As for the Barrett adjustables, I have a set on my Barrett 50 and have had no issues after 300 shots with the rings slipping. So I figured if they held up to a 50, they'll hold up to a measiy 308!

Well I was going to get a Bushnell Elite 4200 3-9x40, but the Millet 4-16x50 tactical with a mil-dot reticle looks pretty convincing now.  Does anyone think that going with the Millet would be a bad idea?

Also can I get away with high rings for the Millet tactical or will I have to go all the way to extra-high?

Sorry to be so clueless :-)

You sure it wasn't a 6-24X50mm in the Bushnell 4200 Elite?  I've been looking at the same scope but the cheapest I've found is $569 at www.theopticzone.com with side focus and mil-dot reticle.

Where did you find one for $400?  At that price, I may skip the Horus I'm planning and go with that one.

Thanks in advance for any info.

You're right.  6 - 24. Side parallax adjustment and mil-dot reticle.  Brain fart.  And my cost was $470 from Jerry's Sport Center.

I'm doing a similar build with my LR-308 24".

After a great deal of reading and balancing cost with quality, I settled on a Leupold Mark 4 3.5-10x40 with Ill. TMR.  I was able to get it for a good price second-hand off of EE.

I like the Millet TRS-1, and it could have been an option, but I didn't want the 1/8 clicks.  Good news, however.  Millet will be selling the TRS-1 after Shot Show '09 with a couple upgrades:

1.  It will have 1/4 clicks.
2.  It will have count-up indicator lines on the turrents.

I plan on getting one of those when they come out.  I would say that it would be a great value-- but I'll have to get a new rifle to put it on.  -- John

My understanding (after visiting JSC) is that you have to be a retail distributor to buy for that price.

I guess you're a retailer or FFL?

Thanks for the info....great price, but unfortunately I don't have the hook up to get one that low.

Oh well, looks like I'll be getting a Horus anyway.

Any other opinions on the Millet TRS-1 vs. a Bushnell 4200?

+1 on any Bushnell Elite 3000 or 4000 series scopes.
I also like/use Warne QD High rings.
Your scope doesn't have to completely clear the height of your Front Sight Base -
only about halfway is required.  The FSB disappears from 3x onward...

burrs black diamond come highly recommended from long range target shooters.  The price is quite attractive as well.

I have the same question about what scope.  I have a new DPMS in 260 and am looking at a Bushnell Elite 6500, 4.5 to 30 with mildot reticle.

Anyone have any experience with this scope?

The Bushnell Elite 4200s supposedly still have better glass than the 6500.

Gratuitous Gun Porn:

My DPMS LR-308 and my SASS both have a Nikon Tactical Mildot 4-16 x 50 . Now days that scope would run around $1,000. I was fortunate to get some of the original ones before the price went up and I got them for around $600 each. I really like the scope, so chances are they will stay there.

My Long Range .223 and my .308 Remington 700 both have a Millett TRS-1 Mildot 4-16 x 50.

My DPMS AP-4 and my POF .223 AR both have a Millett DMS 1-4 X 24.

Also for reference, I run a Nightforce 8-32 x 56 on my AR-50, and a Leupold Mark 4 8.5-25 x 50 LR/T M1 on my Sako .338 Lapua.

That makes 4 Millett scopes that I am running, and while I would not replace my Nikon, Leupold, or Nightforce scopes, I am very happy with the Millett Scopes so far.

Given that a number of my Millett Scopes have round counts into the hundreds on .308 rifles, it seems that they can handle the recoil well. I have been tempted to throw one of the Milletts on my .50 or .338 to see what it will do, but at this point I don't have the time or money to spare.

I have run them through the paces shooting and adjusting my way from 100-600 yards and they seem to hold / return to zero with no major problems. The 1/8 MOA clicks take a little getting used to, but no real big deal.

With the TRS-1 Scopes, you can use the rings they come with to mount them, unless you have some real unusual setup.

I have a DPMS LR-260 and a Millett LRS-1 Mildot 6-25 x 56 in route (will be here tomorrow!). Given my past luck with the Millett scopes, I figured I would give the LRS-1 a try on this new rifle. I was able to pick it up for $370, so if it works well, it will be a real bargain compared to the Leupolds and Nikons.

For practical / economical reasons I would go with a Millett TRS-1 Mildot 4-16 x 50, you should easily be able to get one for $300 or less. If you can find one, and can afford the extra $75-$100, might want to consider the LRS-1.

Super Snipers are not bad scopes, I just prefer the variable power and higher magnification which they don't offer.

Sorry, but I don't have any Bushnells to make a comparison to.

Good Luck,
"Capt Richardson"

I bought my SASS on Gunbroker a few months back. No wait.

I went with a SS 10X in a LaRue mount. The SS is good from 50 yard out to the effective range of the rifle.

I have a Bushnell 3200 10x40. It is a rugged, clear scope and holds zero perfectly. I've clicked in on 200 and 300 yard targets and it always comes back to the same spot on the paper for 100 yards.
